What's the general GPM requirements for an old hay mower such as a John Deere 1209? The tractor I am looking to buy does 4.5. is that sufficient enough to run it at a lower speed such as 8-10MPH?

You might get a better answer if you tell us what tractor you are looking at. Also what part of the country and the type of hay will get you better info.

Are these mower conditioners not driven from a conventional pto shaft.

The only hydraulics are to raise and lower but not drive the implement.

If I am correct, then the hydraulic flow needed will be minimal.

I do not believe the mower will run anywhere near 8-10 mph. I know I would not want to be mowing that fast. The ride would jar your teeth out in most fields.

Mow hay at 8-10mph in a tractor? I’ve never seen a field clean enough to go that fast. I feel like I’m cruising when I get over 4.5, typically probably 3-4 MPH for cutting hay.

8 - 10 mph? Quickest way I've heard of to plug your mower up solid!!!

Just referenced my manual, it said it's capable of up to 9mph. She's a year old and high end of consumer-ish grade mowers. I knew it was single digits but couldn't remember max speed.

I'm going by the way my mower, a six foot sickle bar performs behind my 550 Oliver. If I'm cutting a healthy stand of Brohm-Alfalfa I can't go faster than second gear. If I'm using the Brush Cutter and cutting a thinner stand of same, I'm lucky to use third gear. This was a decent little unit in its day with 40hp. It still runs quite well and most of its horses still pull quite well at sixty some years!

I was just referencing a max speed for the mower according to the manufacture, I've never gotten anywhere close to that.
