I think inflation, rising interest rates, job losses will soften the markets for most goods moving forward. Cheap financing and stimulus cash, are over. Reality is about to slap some people.

The idea of paying $40k over appraisal on homes, is coming to an end, as well as the monetary policies that made all of this possible.

Sure are glad I bought property before the increase, locked in a home build price before it was too insane, and then sold my home for $35k over asking, which I thought was more than it was worth. I was right, but someone thought otherwise. Actually 6 people thought otherwise.

I said in the past two weeks... in the previous 5 years, I’ve averaged a 25-30% investment return, annually. Inflation is out of control, the fed is going to ramp up rates throughout the year, the markets have fallen 12% YTD as of today. The biggest losses after the first of the year, in history. Technically I’ve not realized any losses, but the value of my investments have plummeted $100k since January 1st. This is the “greatest economy ever”... but I’m not seeing it. I’m not hopeful that this year will see much real growth as the fed tightens monetary policy, likely increasing unemployment as well.

You need to think about investments as a long term game (time scale measured in decades). If you try to make it into a year-over-year game and track all the ups and downs, you're going to lose your mind. The problem is, some folks get a false sense of security from the short term ups. When there are a few good years in a row, they get used to it and think that is normal. Big mistake.

The other mentality you need to develop is to view market dips as buying opportunities. Over the long game, these opportunities will really have a big impact on your gains and your wealth.

If you're not in a position to buy during dips, then you just need to sit tight and ride it out.

The unfortunate part of this “correction” is that it came as I was preparing to sell $100k of investments for a barn and tractor... not necessary, but “toys”. If I go down that path now, I realize a loss of $15k because of the correction. Rule #1 don’t sell in a down market. Rule #2 buy. I have a good cash position, so I’m buying... it’s just unfortunate that I didn’t sell those funds before January. Realizing a loss in value of 15% for a frivolous purchase, just doesn’t seem wise.

That would be true if he was taking out investments, like a 401k, that were tax deferred. Depending upon the details, it could involve capital gains, but it could be basically like withdrawal from a saving account.

True, he said withdrawing from investments so my mind went to my situation.

I want to withdraw a couple hundred thousand from an IRA to supplement proceeds from my current home to build a new home in 3 years. My plan is to be debt free so no mortgage.

I ran my idea past my advisor. He said the tax implications would a large chunk of money. He advised a mortgage.

I'm 70 so I can see his point.
