The tier 5 article implies DEF for NOx emissions and DPF for particulates, and auto shut-down to minimize idling. With forced warranty extensions on Manufacturers (probably only on Emissions stuff only) means that any Diesel Engines sold in California will be more expensive/less attractive to operate. No clue how they plan on reducing CO2, since combustion usually produces CO. More sensors, more complex computer programming will result in more limp mode (or outright shutdown) driving costs even higher. The tax incentives for non-emission vehicles are there to drive down their price & (MAYBE) offset the additional cost of operating. NO. Cal already faces blackouts & brownouts with outrageous pricing of electricity due to PG&E fires & Mandatory sourcing of GREEN Generation (which doesn't provide surge capacity), so what is it going to look like when everyone is plugging in to top off their batteries? Basically, CA is telling Central Valley farmers/ranchers MOVE to another state & we can use your land to give free housing to illegals so that Apple/Google/Facebook employees in silicon valley can have their maids living in Modesto/Salinas/Soledad rather than further out. Similar to their High-Speed Rail. LA to SF was supposed to be 2 hours, it'll be 4 (minimum) if it ever gets done & Southwest flights can be had for pennies compared to the cost of operating that train. Who pays? CA and Federal Taxpayers. The idiocy will only end when money leaves the State and there is no one left to pay for the stupidity.
Nice rant 👏

I wonder if they will have checkpoints at all the roads coming into Cali looking for noncompliant diesel and gasoline engines like they do now looking for a "smuggled" bag of apples.

But wait, they're okay with NASCAR building an entire race track inside the LA Colosseum and running a race that burns all that fuel and spills all those fluids on the ground. Not to mention all the spectators that drove to the track. Funny how money works.

I knew the regeneration cycle would be happening as I kept away from the larger diesels as my buddy burnt two engines up on his trucks. But the regeneration lights come on, right as I am in the middle of something, or it starts beeping and I have to stop immediately out in the field and find a empty spot to regenerate so I dont set the whole forest on fire. This is nuts...
Would imagine it is stinky, too.

No, at least not with my Kubota. Literally, unless I see the light has come on in the dash, I have no idea the regeneration cycle is going on. No difference in sound or smell or in how the tractor operates. But that's because I keep the engine at optimal operating rpm. If the engine has been operating at or around idle speeds then if it is time for a regen cycle there will be a warning to increase engine rpms until the warning light goes out and the exhaust system is hot enough for the regen cycle to take place.

My understanding is when the tractor is new - when there is paint and perhaps some oil stains on the exhaust system - then yes, until all that burns off there is a smell.

"Money talks..."
...actually "money" flies around on private jets telling us to walk or ride bicycles.

True, first regen had a very strong, foul odor. Second regen I hardly noticed that it had started. I noticed a slight "note" change, looked down and sure enough it was on regen. Hardly any smell at all on second. Haven't hit third yet. Getting them ~ every 70 hours.

Its one of the reasons I tried to stay under 25 hp, but it seems I needed more rather than less and should have gotten a 40 hp or more...

I tried also. But I learned quickly that 25 HP combined with a hydro trans wasn't going to work on a 4,500 lb. piece of equipment.

If a guy wanted the gear drive trans he could probably do a lot of work with 25 HP. But with the hydro any jobs were basically low range only.

Ever been stuck behind a 6.4L Ford diesel in regen? Better switch your HVAC to “recirculation”. It’ll choke you out.

No, but I've been stuck behind plenty of diesel pickups with the black smoke rolling out of the exhaust... talk about something that will choke you out. And why is it that guys who drive those deleted diesels are so scared of shutting them of in a parking lot? Do they think that we WANT to listen to that rattle and smell their stench, or is it just that they are scared it won't start again if they shut it off?
