Since we are especially now realizing how strategic fossil fuels are, maybe the gov't could work on a multi-pronged method to ease transition.

You are absolutely right, although it shouldn't take a catastrophe or war for that to happen. I also don't believe in the logic shown in the EV thread elsewhere, that we should expect China to provide us with cheap EVs. Our GDP already is less than the national debt, we can't continue to send jobs overseas.

Got you beat. My 650 KLR gets 70+ depending on how far I twist the handgrip.... The RV industry just took a massive sucker punch. No one in their right mind (unless they were extremely flush) would buy a fuel sucking land yacht, to go 'Glamping' in.

The auto makers are also going to take a sucker punch as well. The big push (was) for land yachts and big pickup trucks, not fuel efficient cars so they just got caught with their drawers down as well.

I too have an RV but it's a truck camper and it's kept inside in the big barn when not in use. 7 years old and just like new. They last forever when kept inside and unlike a gas guzzler single purpose RV, the camper goes in the farm truck bed for trips and comes out when not.

Ford just came out with the Maverick, which is similar to a Ridgeline and depending on configuration can get 30+ MPG.
Orders exceeded demand by so much that they've stopped taking orders for this model year... and that was before gas started skyrocketing. Do you suppose maybe they'll get the message that people want inexpensive, simple vehicles with decent fuel economy?

The next county over, Elkhart Co, IN, is the RV manufacturing capitol of the U.S. They currently have less than 1% unemployment (the lowest in the nation). In the past, they've been a reliable predictor of things to come.

Most everyone I know does not intentionally try to pollute. But most environmentalists I know are bigger hypocrites than the rest of the people I know.

They get on jets. They crank up their vehicles. Their EV cars are plugged into fossil fuel/nuclear plants. They overlook the lithium mines while they condemn the coal mines. They overlook forest fires and volcanic episodes for causing huge dirty air problems. They contribute to lobby for their agenda. The list they overlook is long and tawdry....

Last year in our Feb deep freeze, it was a blessing to have a fireplace (my home is all electric) when the power went out. It was the only way to keep my family warm.

Yes pollution moves around worldwide. Not much we can do about other countries. We don’t have to pollute our own country. I have had to work on rehabilitation of old coal mine locations. Impossible to make them into productive land. Rock piles with thin soil on top struggling to grow grass and forget about productive timber. Leaching mercury and other metals into the water system. And the soil for miles around coal plants have unacceptable levels of toxins so it’s not even safe to graze cattle unless you like mercury in your steaks. Destroying our country because other countries are doing the same is simply stupid policy. There are better options: gas, nuclear, solar, wood biomass, etc…

Coal miners are no different than lots of other folks working in dying industries. And many have refused retraining opportunities. We all make choices.

I realize that. Thats why I want comprehensive training and maybe some financial support provided for them.
Its not fair to have the rug ripped out from under them and expect them to survive.
Offer buyouts for those above 50.
Offer training for those under 50 and extended unemployment bennies.

Not when the government gets involved in making them die faster.
Anyone who refuses training in other industries will have to suffer, but if you are going to mandate the death of coal from gov, then something must be offered to help these poor people.

“We all make choices”. Im aware. Its when the choice to end your job comes via mandate that I think its only fair to offer some assistance.
