It's not a new company - yet - they're just splitting the businesses internally. Everyone who makes it their business knows the ICE is dead, this is just Ford's way of preparing to spin off and jettison all the old legacy stuff at some point down the road. EVs represent 1 out of every 12 vehicles sold around the globe and that figure increases dramatically every year so it will be a lot easier for them doing it this way. I would not be surprised to see all domestic manufacturers go this route because it's the only way they'll ever be able to compete with the Teslas and Rivians of the world. The only thing limiting EV sales today is that they can't build them fast enough, and war and gas prices will ensure that continues. This is just a way to help Ford better position itself to capitalize on that.
OEMs will have no choice but to go with EVs, Canada and a number of states have already passed legislation banning ICE by 2035, that's not that far away.

Rather than forming new companies why don't they start forming new vehicles which we can afford to buy and operate.
Put your money where your mouth is, and build an inexpensive EV pickup in the price range of the Ranger or Colorado... with the same range and ease of fueling.
That's the Ford legacy after all... Henry is rolling over in his grave.
I could see them doing that with the Ford Ranger and the new Ford Maverick

I was thinking about a hybrid Maverick this summer, for general running around, keeping my Colorado for when I need 4WD or the extra towing capacity... until I can afford to upgrade to an F250.
They are so popular though, that Ford has stopped taking orders until summer... most likely when the 2023 model year comes out.
That should tell manufacturers something about the way we feel about their $80,000 monoliths.

And that was BEFORE gas prices went up 50% in a month.

Because the whole EV revolution and its vehicles were never designed for the common man in the first place. Those flaunting EVs only think of their situation, a garage and their own charging station, which only a minority of the population possesses.

Also, price is still much too high. Combine that with the charging requirements and length of time to charge and it is virtually impossible for >50% of the population to own.

So if ICE is dead and mandated out of existence rapidly (see fuel prices), lots of America will be riding buses or ubers or bicycles very soon. It’ll look a lot more like China with the loss of freedom of movement.

I Hope it changes and they also realize heavy ICE powered trucks are needed to get their EV cars/parts shipped and bring them their food.

In the short term (the next few months) people are going to realize how much farmers depend on those diesel tractors to grow their food and ethanol, and what powers those trucks which keep the country supplied.

Can you imagine someone trying to make ends meet just a few months ago compared to today?
What does that person do now? Go on welfare? (n)

I already called a few of my little customers and told them I’m DONE. It ain’t worth farming their fields anymore.

Anyway, back to EVs….

They will, we're just in the early adopter phase of the transition right now. The higher the price the higher the margins so as long as manufacturers have year+ waitlists for $80,000 EVs they're going to target that market first.

The first cellphones literally cost thousands of dollars, now you can get many for free with a contract. The first HD TVs cost many thousands of dollars but today you can get one a at Walmart for $300. All new tech goes like that and EVs will be no different.

You guys are much more optimistic than I in regards to EVs. I'll be long gone before EVs are the norm. In the same sense, 50 years from now ICEs may only be seen at Car Shows.

The USPS just told EVs to go jump in a lake. They're staying with ICE.

Legislation means nothing. Less than nothing. It can be changed, repealed or ignored. And it will be just like every other school-girl piece of idiocy they try to foist on The People.

Funny how none of it affects them. The politicians, the managerial elites, the actual elites? Sure, they can tool around town in their little EVs and plug them at night.

But when it comes to going distances, they'll use totally inefficient Jet Airplanes.

These people no longer have anything in common with the citizens they're supposed to serve.

If I want to take my family on a week or two week-long vacation, I've got to load them up in my Truck, hook up the camper and head someplace where we can actually look up at night see stars.

Not them. They Jet-Set to the Riviera, the Alps, the Caribbean, Colorado, wherever. They go on phony-baloney 'business' meetings to Costa Rica, the Bahamas and, if they're trying to save money -- Vegas, Miami, Sang Frang, etc. When was the last time you heard of one of them having a Company 'Meeting' in Dee-Troit or Cleveland?

I think there's a difference from the first cell phones, etc. Ford has stated that they'll be a software-driven business, that's been supported by the recent announcement of a partnership with Google. I don't believe people can be naïve enough to think that they'll not be tracking you through your car and selling the data. This data farming is where the companies will really make their money and there could be some subsidies with the purchase of a EV. You may or may not be able to opt of everything as with all the privacy notices everyone sees now whenever you log onto a computer, but they may be willing to drop the price by having you agree to certain data collection.
What would the National Weather Service be willing to pay to have some sort of weather data acquisition system in every car?
