AKA Jaguar. They are native to Africa, Central and South America.

I've been watching those videos for a few months now. Luna is a beautiful animal, and it's amazing how she and the Rottweiler get along.

Yes I've read all the posts etc about panthers and jaguars...This information calls the animal in question is being called a panther or a leopard that is in the family... genus Panthera

Jaguars are in the Americas.
Leopards are in Asia and Africa (no longer in Siberia).
Both have black variants and those are both called black panthers even though they are different species.

Seeing how my house cat can scare me sometimes, I can't imagine her being 60 pounds!

I have seen one black "panther" or cougar in my lifetime and it was about 40 years ago on a late night drive on I-10 on the Florida panhandle around the Apalachicola River area. It ran across the highway in front of my car close enough that I started to hit the brakes to avoid it. It was a large, long tailed black cat I estimate at 60 pounds. I don't know if it is called a puma, cougar or leopard but it was a black panther to me.

We have mountain lions here. Most call them cougars. A fellow from up north - Deer Park - runs hounds to hunt them. He has bagged several, just five miles west of me here. Not something I would want to "cozy up" to.

I used to work on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in eastern Arizona. One day I was at a logging equipment mechanic shop at Fort Apache and I saw an old black and white photo of a huge dead cat in the bed of what I guessed was a mid-1960s Chevy pickup truck. It was mostly black with mottled spots on the grey colored back. It must have weighed 150 pounds because it stretched the entire length of the truck bed. I asked about the photo and was told that the owner’s father had hired a trapper to catch the lion that was killing his calves. The trapper ended up surprised to catch this huge jaguar. Jaguars are occasionally sighted in lower elevation areas of AZ and NM and are considered endangered in the US, but more common in Mexico.

The cougar I saw in the bed of the hunter pickup was no 60# weakling. It stretched out the full eight feet. More on the order of what jyoutz speaks of.

Adult male jaguars are huge; larger than cougars. You can see them in many zoos. But I have personally seen some huge mountain lions similar to what oosik saw. Mountain lions are common where I live.

We (in Canada) have more and more sighting of cougar's in places where it hasn't been seen in years like Northern Ontario and Quebec.. there's even a trail cam video of a mom and its cub, its nice to see them back in away but its not something you want to see from up closes.

They are also native to southern AZ and New Mexico, but they are endangered in the US.
I read that, also. Funny how when an animal is at the extreme extent of it's range there aren't as many around... yet we consider them "endangered". It's the same up here with the Canada lynx; there are plentiful across the border but "endangered" here.
Using that logic humans should be considered an endangered species in the Arctic Circle.

Yeah, we get the occasional Canada lynx in northern NM and an effort was made to establish critical habitat for the species here. But in this case reason prevailed and the effort was declined by biologists.

Actually the lynx are doing quite well here now. Forest practices of the past 60 years or so have created great rabbit habitat which is what they feed on. In a heavy snow winter they can still get around while the bobcat struggles.

About 25 years ago I witnessed for over five minutes at about 70' a black Fla panther that walk through my property near what is referred to as the Corkscrew Swamp sanctuary ne of Naples , Fla 34120 . I would say it weighed like 33lbs at best . It was not that large . I don't care what people say or think I know what I saw .

About 4 years ago down here on I75 and near exit 116 which is the Bonita Beach Rd exit a black panther was hit by a vehicle and killed . Pics in media , news etc . I tried finding article but could'nt . Theres more panthers down here than what local "officials " claim IMO .

BTW I and don't want to get off of Piney's thread topic but I don't believe in sasquatch . Good thread keep em coming .......................
