Should I use conventional oil, or synthetic oil in my tractor.

But it tells you everywhere to use one or the other, not switch back and forth...

Then the blended formulas should be illegal then as it's a mixed ratio of dino and synthetic. Using blended is more than going back and forth, it's using it in a combination.

And due to marketing, NO BRAND tells you the blended ratio !

People just can't understand the marketing behind it, only that the price is more attractive. LOL

I just love these oil threads! My humble opinion is that people spend way too much time fussing over one type (synthetic vs non-synthetic), brand (Shell vs. Amsoil vs. Super Tech), weight (10W-40 vs 15W-40) oil being slightly or vastly better than another. The reality is that oil caused failures are pretty darn rare, and often oil is blamed for failures when other factors are the true cause. If the failure is due to oil, the primary cause was still likely to be gross neglect or ignorance.

That being said, synthetic is indeed better than dyno in almost every respect (not every respect), and is probably most always a better choice. That holds true for old or new engines. Changing back and forth, and even mixing them, although not recommended, isn't nearly as catastrophic as some people would leave you to believe.

I really laugh at people that are diehards saying NOT to go back and forth, yet they use the Blended Synthetic. A mixed ratio of dino and full synthetic. When I point it out to them, there is a long pause and stare at the bottle they just poured into their engine. Then they look back at my big smile on my face.

Yes, you are correct, this whole oil talk is a bit absurd. Science backs both for good reasons of dino and full synthetic. So for my applications it still applies.

Depends on the season.

Summer = Dino

Winter = Synthetic

I use synthetic oil. Change it at 400 hours or less. My dealer also recommended synthetic. I discussed this specifically in relation to using Rotella T6 BEFORE I changed from Kubota engine oil. He did say that because synthetic was thinner, some tractors may show slight leaks. His last statement was, you can't get any better oil than T6. I think he was right, because we can't get any T6 now. Ha. I have 3 extra gallons.
I am going to switch my truck and tractor from T6 to Valvoline synthetic. Because Cummins recommends it and it’s available at the local Cummins service shop.

Valvoline is good oil and those are two great reasons. I would always follow the recommendation of the manufacturer. And I am uncertain of the supply in the distance future for T6, I was fortunate to find the 3 gallons I have now for the next oil change. I will stay with synthetic also if I eventually have to change from T6.

It’s the API rating that you need to look at. The info shows “API Designation CG-4, CH-4, CI-4, CJ-4, CK-4, SL, SM, SN”.
So does your tractor require any of the above ratings? C are diesel specs and S the gasoline specs.

thanks, yes, the rating complies with my tractor specs. figure the "gasoline" fuel is a misprint on ORe's side. just looking for any opinions or empirical data on the product, thx again

I just switched from T-6 Rotella, due to unobtainium issues, to something called Farm-Rated, a locally produced brand sold at Fleet Farm. I think it'll probably be just as good as the fancy stuff....er highly marketed stuff. I use 540 year-round.

I don’t like the word “ probably” for a lot of reasons. Standards are the goal posts for all oils to meet, at the very least. It’s how long they stay within those standards is what differentiates brands/types from each other… I find that Amsoil is a tough contender to the top spot.
