I had to watch several times in full screen. It appears that the rear trailer axle locks up when starting to jackknife just before the trailer hits the car although no tire smoke. Possibly not enough gain....but still a dufus situation!

Good catch.
The rear axle is locked up from the time it comes in the frame until the end.

You are correct and I saw that. I was referring to the actual weight of the trailer when it was in the accident. If he couldn't handle that, he has no business pulling a heavier trailer, brakes or no brakes.

What I couldn't tell as it went over was if it was even equipped with brakes... but the posters above me answered that question.
he a2000#?
Watch it again, that appears to be a 7000# landscape trailer with dual 3500# axles:

2000# empty sure, but brakes are required based on GVWR on most states (anything over 2000#, 3000# or 3500# GVWR requires brakes depending on the state).
You can see that it has something inside the sides in the screenshot and it appears to have been loaded tongue heavy.

Looks like it is something similar to this, but in a 18 or 20 foot version:

I agree that he shouldn't have been driving the way that he was, but on weight I would bet that he was in the 3000# to 5000# range, not 2000#. Usually a landscape trailer runs 100# per foot of length with regular sides and he looked to be 20' long with 4' sides on it and was at least half full, it looks like at least 3 ft full for the front half and less in the back.

The trailer empty weighs about 2000, but with the steel sides and whatever else he had on he was considerably heavier.
So I was a bit optimistic.
Still, he was a dervish for driving the way that he does. That's seems to be typical of people who want to be truck drivers but can't pass the road test. They think because they are in something a bit bigger everybody else is merely an obstacle.

I encountered one last year pulling a big enclosed trailer... with no brake lights. If I hadn't been turning into the same gas station I would have hit him. I politely mentioned that he didn't have brake lights and he made it clear that he knew but didn't care. A lot of people think that if you rear end them they are going to get rich off the lawsuit; but if you don't have brake lights you're going to be hurting financially as well as physically.

Reminds me of one I encountered last week. The trailer had a 4 door sedan on it and the trailer had obviously been overloaded at some point since the tires had that stylish cocked in at the top and out out the bottom that were slick. Not a light one on the trailer, all had been broken off and the only light working on the truck ( I could see when he made a turn ) was the center cab brake light. Plus I could not see any chain or strap of any kind on the car.

Ran into two sheriff's deputies having a bull session on the side of the road a 1/2 mile down the highway from where the guy turned off onto another road so I stopped and told them, reaction, "EH, we'll call somebody."
