Cool Or Creepy Things Found In The Bush Or On Your Property

Yeah, I used to read about the feet washing up in the PNW.
No shortage of corpses in the North Pacific. We lose tourists on the coast every year, plus sport fishermen in inadequate boats that capsize and sink. Occasional professional fishermen and freighter crews. Never turn your back on the ocean. Never climb on wet rocks. Always wear a life vest any place you can't stand up.

I grew up on a small lake. Small, but dangerous. At least 5 people have drown there (3 adults and 2 children) and 2 became quadriplegics diving in shallow water. No one ever drown at the public beach (I and my siblings used to life guard there), but always in no swimming places or falling through the thin ice. We also have a deceivingly dangerous river right across the road that has claimed dozens of people over the years.

Then Lake Michigan is only 30 miles away. I'm pretty sure Lake Michigan claims more lives every year than any of the other Great Lakes. This end of the lake is a bowl, and rip currents are fairly common. I almost drown in it when I was a little kid. Put a fear of water in me for a couple years, but I go over it and eventually became a lifeguard and then a water safety instructor.

While remodeling a room in my old house I found a shelf over the closet door that had been paneled over. On the shelf was an old doll. I gave it to the woman that grew up there, she said her aunt gave it to her. Also had a box with Military code of conduct book, book on artillery, a couple of translation books for I think French, and Italian, and in the bottom was a banner about 2 1/2' x 5' ********.
The man I bought from had already passed, his wife had alzhimers pretty bad. So I talked with two of his brothers who were still alive- neither of them knew anything, or that it even existed. They both said their brother never spoke of the war. I still have it and would love to know the story behind it.

While we were remodeling our old house that was built in 1930, we tore out the old paperboard used for the walls. Our kids placed some treasures and comments in a metal tin before the drywall went up. In the new house, the grand kids did the same thing. We will always wonder who finds them and when. Jon

Yup. The weather on Lake Michigan changes in a heartbeat. It is by far the deadliest of the Great Lakes. Last year it accounted for 57 of the 110 deaths on the Great Lakes.

I think folks who don't have experience with boating on the Great Lakes underestimate the challenges. Then again, folks on this coast seem to routinely seriously underestimate sneaker waves in the Pacific. It looks calm, and then whoompf! Some wave comes twenty feet higher on the rocks, and that's all she wrote. Never turn you back on the ocean around here. I lost several colleagues from the same, albeit large, company over several years to sneaker waves. All were just sightseeing. All had young families.

Stay safe out there.

Peter

Not found on my property, but on the Cemetery property next to us....

When I was a kid, the Cemetery next to us had a dump down by the lake. They'd put all of their spare grave dirt, tree branches, leaves, etc. down there. They also put these 6' long by about 24" wide metal troughs down there. Dozens of them. They looked similar to cement truck chutes, but with solid ends and a foot on each end so they wouldn't roll. Turns out, they were used to place bodies into then put in the crematorium. Kids would dig the troughs out of the dump, drag them over to the lake, and use them for canoes. 😝

I mentioned it to my mom. She had me show her what I was talking about.... the health department and newspaper were summoned, and the dump was bulldozed over shortly after.

We did that too and decades later got a call from the newer homeowners while remodeling the wooden floor in the barn and found our then 7 year old daughter's time capsule and letters from long ago. There were some noteworthy treasures of the kid kind but also a note describing her dogs and what she did every day. She went to school and such but had to pump water for the cows in the winter and shovel snow around the door. She also described sleeping under multiple feather comforters and also teaching her dogs school things on her new blackboard.

The children that found the treasures wanted to send them to us but our daughter said to add their own time capsule with notes, seal both up and return to the hiding spot so kids decades later could find them again.

This definitely comes under the "COOL" category as per the thread title. 👍

Hah! I also grew up on a small lake, too. My dad flooded 3 acres in a valley in the 70’s. We had the diving platforms, the floating dock, the rope swing, fishing and played ice hockey on it in the winter. What a great source of healthy exercise. It did witness a few injuries (broken teeth from hockey, couple minor diving injuries) and a lot of trespassers, but all in all a great experience.
I was a lifeguard, too. Guarded in college outside until October, then inside in one of the natatoriums rest of year. Money for tuition (and beer). Used to have to be on your toes to lifeguard the water polo matches or the diving team’s meets!!

I know our past house has been remodeled after we sold, but do not know if the hiding place was found. Cool that yours was and your daughter's response to add and reseal. Jon

Not too many people swim in Lake Superior. I tried it once and came out a popsicle. I heard that Edmund Fitzgerald drowned up there though.
