Root balls on downed trees.

/ Root balls on downed trees. #11
I have a friend that was cutting large oak trees on his place that were uprooted by a tornado. He didn't realize his two sons, (age 6 & 7) were playing in the hole when he cut the trunk. They didn't find find the kids for hours.

That's awful, I couldn't imagine...

I have always wondered if it would make more sense to break up the root ball first. If it fall back in the hole, doesn't that make it harder to deal with the stump?

Any new techniques or thoughts over the last 8 years? A tornado just left me with several of these.

Cut the root ball, then the rest of the bole.
So, chip and hack away at the root ball and leave the trunk to keep it weighted down. Then when you get the root ball done, IF you get the root ball done, finish off he rest. Right or not?
