I asked people advice on the best way to store firewood if you won’t use it in a couple of years. This tree was a blow down and I got it cut up and stacked. I’ll probably split it this winter. The tree was about 24” dbh and my tractor would only pick up a piece that was about 7 feet long or less.

Finally got out of the house doing remodeling and repairs and fired my chainsaws up again! Had an oak shading my garden and nursery I wanted to take down and besides I need some more firewood. Took a smallish cherry out first that was in the way, may split it separate for smoking wood. It was kind of leaning the wrong way and awful close to my fence so I had to direct it a bit. Turned out pretty well and landed exactly where I wanted it to go. Now the work begins cutting it up! Debating just bucking it all up into firewood, or maybe cutting a couple of slabs out of the trunk and splitting the rest up.. not sure yet.

Almost forgot to take a before pic, but here it is.. You can see the fence I need to miss..

Curious to see how much firewood I get out of it.

Nice "placement" of that tree Hunt. Looks like quite a bit of good wood will come out of that, would be interesting to see you make boards instead of firewood but your needs are far more important than my viewing pleasure! Good job.

The thing is, oak boards are more furniture lumber than construction lumber. I cut mostly construction lumber on my sawmill and I have billions and billions of southern yellow pine for that but I do not have an abundance of hardwoods on my property and for firewood that is what I want, I do not like pine for burning. I do however like the occasional slab laying around for a bench or table or whatever so we will see. When I get everything else cut up and down to the trunk, I'll see how it is looking and and make my decision then. AND I can always cut a slab or two out of it , split the rest, and if I have to I can split the slab into firewood at a later date. I have a big oak slab now that looks like a hockey stick which I'll probably turn into firewood.

That oak would be nice. I'd have new counter tops...lol. my island countertop is made out of maple from our property.
