Was changing the oil in a nephew's car and he had picked up some Mobil 1 oil and a Mobil 1 filter at Walmart. Everything went well until we pulled the "new" oil filter out of the box. We found a used filter in the box.

Open those boxes and double check.... Car will now sit on the lift and after work today when he will return my car with a new filter in hand.

Wouldn't a used oil filter leak oil all over and make the box an oily mess? Who would go to the trouble of returning a used filter to save the $6?

I was a mechanic for 30 years. We'd get used spark plugs delivered all the time. It was usually at end of the day when customer needed their car.

I always open the filter in the store to make sure it matches the box, this after the cashier did it for me and when I asked why she stated that people take the expensive filters and put them in a cheapo filter box and attempt to purchase it.

You've been Walmart customer scammed.

People return things for a full refund by swapping the old for the new. Walmart will not take the time to inspect returned items, thus it goes back on the shelf.

As prices have inched up to $9 per filter these days, suspecting foul play before you purchase is wise enough for consideration.

Another reason not to shop at Walmart. But I guess this could happen anywhere. But at the parts store, they probably inspect the returned item a bit better. No experience with that though.

I buy my filters from Amazon or Rock Auto. Usually better prices than NAPA or O'Reilys anyway.

Same thing happened to me with a $56 bottle of Rotella T6. I had the truck all drained out and was going to put in the new oil, opened the screw lid with no click... hmm... then the foil looked a little janky (because it was regular tin foil glued to the bottle) and I found 2.5 gallons of used oil. WalMart return scam. Dang!

I too shop online a lot but Rockauto's shipping often puts them out of price range. Still, sure like the convenience.

Wife bought me a waffle iron from Target and few years ago. At the birthday party, I unwrapped it and it had obviously been used. There was burn batter all over the iron. Target was very nice about replacing it with a new one, no questions asked, which I had them open the box of the replacement and check to see that it was actually unused. :)

I had this happen with an AR trigger from a fleet farm. Open up the nifty trigger box to find part of a standard mil-spec trigger. Fleet Farm took it back and as I explained the to young girl helping me, they should look into the records to see who returned the trigger and prosecute them for theft.

I bought a set of rabbit ears at Walmart years ago, and upon getting home I discovered one of the antennae had been “repaired” with scotch tape.
More recently; I used to use a lot of beef and chicken broth while cooking, generally in boxes as it was cheaper. I had to stop though... they “improved” the covers so they would break the tamper proof foil when you opened it. I apparently ended up with a package which had been opened and put back on the shelf... it went rancid and I ruined the entire meal plus leftovers which I was cooking. It seems rather pointless to have tamper proof packaging if you can’t tell when it’s been tampered with.

You'd be amazed.

Yep, I bought some shop light fixtures at Home Depot, I opened one and it was covered in bird **** and didn’t work. The return desk was reluctant to take it back, thought I had made up a story.

Bought a new toilet at lowes. Got it home started unboxing it, and there was like dirt/dust remnants in the bottom of the bowl, oh well didn't think much about it. Got the toilet out, and there was still a portion of a used wax ring stuck to the bottom, the lid was not the one for it etc. So took it right back, and got another. I did open it in the aisle to check everything before I bought it.

Same here a couple of years ago. 5 quart jug of Mobil1 synthetic with old oil inside. I check just about everything these days. Sad but bet its about to get worse.
