I have no idea what to buy

I own a Deere Z920 which is a commercial ZT and I recommend any of the Z9xx series. I'm mowing 2-2.5 acres of lawn
That said, if I were to replace it today, I'd want a diesel. Deere has the Z994 and Z997. The Z997 is great if you have a minimum of 3 acres
I'd also consider a Kubota. Downside, diesel ZT are more expensive
Main thing, IMHO, is get a commercial machine.
Deck width...mine is a 60" deck. If your lawn is very smooth, a 72" deck would be good...if a bit rough, go for a smaller deck to minimize scalping.
Suspension or air seat would be a worthwhile addition

Hey:

I am buying a property with about 1.8 acres of grass. This is my first time owning this much grass to mow and first time buying a ride on mower. Can anyone give me some directions on what the market looks like out there? What brand is garbage? Which is really high end but way overpriced? I live in SW Michigan which has a moderate amount of snow as well and the property is flat. Any direction is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Matt
I use a Ferris 48" zero turn I like it it has a nice suspension that my Scagg didn't have. The Scagg is the brand to buy if you are letting illegals operate your machines because they are mostly bullet proof (the machines not the illegals).

We went through half a dozen before my wife found a mower that she liked for mowing our very irregular shaped 1.1 acres of lawn. The lawn is long and narrow along a creek and mowing it is a bit of work with lots of trees, shubs, and rock features to maneuver around. Definitely not flat land.
The mower is a Honda HRX 217 electric start. It turns out that the electric start is an important feature, as is the hydrostatic transmission with fwd & reverse, blade stop, and cruise control.
Cost was slightly under a thousand dollars six years ago. In spite of a lot of use, it hasn't required anything but gas and an oil change since we got it. We pamper it by knocking out the filters and charging the battery each spring. It lives outside but under a corner of the barn roof.

For Mowing & Snowing ?

at first I would be agreeing with others about the Zero Turns. - great for mowing
however I have yet to see a Zero Turn that works great for snowing.

I agree, a commercial machine would be the best solution

I have experienced Michigan winters. The snow blades that are built for a zero turn mower seem to be more for convenience, but may not be adequate in my humble opinion. I think that two separate machines would work, OR a tractor OR perhaps a Ventrac / Steiner / Power Trac ($$$) with snow attachment. (these may be overkill for property that is basically level). Perhaps consider ...

1) commercial zero turn for mowing
2) older / cheaper tractor (30 hp min) for snowing

Welcome to the TBN forum. have fun, happy researching

For a zero turn, the three critical areas of cost/durability:

Engine (Kawasaki over Kohler, but both work)
Deck (welded more durable than stamped)
Transmissions (HydroGear EZT is entry level, EZ2800 is a step up, and EZ3100 and above are commercial grade)

Obviously, bigger motor and larger deck leads to faster cutting.

After those choices, most everything else is creature comfort and ergonomics. Suspension seat is great for bumpy ground. Easy blade height adjustment is useful if changing heights frequently. Controls. Gas tank capacity.

Figure out size and quality levels you want in the major components, then find a machine that works for your pocketbook.

Another viable option for a lawn >2 acres is a battery powered ZT, such as the EGO

No experience with this machine, but EGO tools are quite good if you don't want to mess with gasoline

I will also say, it pays to have a nice suspension seat, flex forks, etc… some sort of suspension, as ZTRs can mow fast, but your spine needs to survive the ride across the lawn. A stand on unit would eliminate that issue. I actually quite like some of the stand on units.

Some questions. . . .What is your budget for the mower? Commercial diesel z turns are wonderful, but could be way beyond your budget. Also, the advice to buy from a dealer instead of a big box store is a good idea. You can get service, parts and advice on the various models at a dealer, things you may not get at the big box store. Many of the commercial brands have models that are a step down from commercial that are referred to as “estate” mowers. Less cost than full commercial models but many of the good features. Next question, you mentioned snow. Are you really just asking about mowing or do you also need something to move snow?
