Lawn Roller fill

I used concrete filler, no annual fill/empty hassels. Add an automotive style coupler and a 3pt trailer mover.

I'm a water/drain user. Besides the dangers of freezing........the roller is so heavy that it settles into wherever it is stored for the winter or summer...Then it can only be moved with the tractor. When empty I can move it around by hand as needed.

Cheers,
Mike

You can often get windshield wiper fluid for less than $1/gallon. Think everything else would be far higher. Might put water in and a small amount of alcohol. Can probably look up freeze point of various methyl alcohol mixes with water and add whatever you need for the freeze protection needed in your area.

Lawn rollers are really only used to push new grass seed into the soil without compacting too much. Don't see any other use for them. And alternative that works well is to broadcast straw over the new seed. Then, it doesn't need that push into the soil.
Wish I got -30° wiper fluid for that price! Usually 3-4$/gal. Lawn Rollers are also used to mash down the bumps that often occur during Spring. Use after heavy rain and mowing.
Mine is Stainless Steel (old Chemical tank) and I used 4" square Oak blocks soaked in used oil as bearings for 1-1/8" OD Axles. They have lasted over 20 years.
For Steel tanks, I would recommend pouring in a couple quarts of used oil and slowly tow it around to be sure inside is covered completely. Drain remainder and dispose of properly. Fill with water for use and empty when done, especially if freezing/Winter weather is imminent. Yes there will be a bit of oil in the water. No Biggie.

I've had my roller for several years now. It is made of steel, the largest one that TS sells. First thing that happened was the pot metal bearings broke. Next the cold pressed 90 degree angles broke and then the seam on the roller itself leaks. This year the two angles where the metal meets the tow bar broke off. I weld the frame and sometimes have had to bend the steel back into shape, but the seam on the barrel is too light of metal to weld so I have to use a water sealant once in a while. Keep an eye on the flexing of the towing frame as you use it and this is why I suggest WATER only.
Sorry about your luck. Try a long patch 3" wide over the seam. TIG weld or skillful mig.

Geeze, roll it on a couple 2x4's for parking it.

I'n thinking of getting a lawn roller. It requires 94 gallons of liquid. What is the cheapest non-freezing liquid that I could use? I don't know if beet juice would cost more than antifreeze, or how much antifreeze I'd need.
Look for Winter (-15 to -30) windshield washer which should be on clearance now for $1-2 a gallon..

I would always use water. It is easy to fill and when done I just drain it on the lawn or wherever. Then you can move the roller around easily when not in use which is most of the time.

What's a flat lawn? 76 years old and have never seen one! I quit trying to get one flat or even close to it years ago. A real exercise in futility. S
