We need lots of heavy c
It is destined for export. No US refinery is capable of processing that oil and even though that oil has been exported for years from the US gulf coast, no US company has built a refinery capable of processing that low grade oil, nor has any company indicated that this is planned. It’s not really a factor in US fuel. US refineries have access to much higher grade US produced crude oil. A fabricated issue.
This article seems to think otherwise.
The US imports a lot of heavy crude oil.

”The United States is currently the world’s largest crude oil producer, but it still needs to import heavy varieties of oil, as most of the domestic output tends to be light crude while refineries are running on a diverse range of crudes, including heavy oil, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in an analysis on Friday.“

The Canadian tar sand oil has been coming through the US on trains to the gulf ports for years. If the US wants it, it’s available. But obviously since it’s being exported, there’s no US industrial demand for it.

Easy to find $7 diesel and $6+ gasoline right now.

I was surprised to see E85 at $3.65 in the SF Bay Area.

It has been discussed a bit in some smaller articles. There was also talk of possibly running a parallel line so the Dakota oils could be brought down less expensively. And the original could have been easily modified to accept other inputs then the Canadian oil. It's quite common to use pigs to separate products in pipelines.
It's the heavy crude out of the oil sands in Canada, and destined for over seas refineries as ours can't economically refine it for use in this country.
All of our refineries prefer sweet crude as it's easier to refine with less emission controls on the refinery. Even the sour crude out of the Permian basin (Texas, New Mexico) is more costly to refine for use in this country, because of the fuel formulation rules.
There are a lot of refineries in the Dakotas. Why would oil be “brought down “ to the gulf coast? The same with oil from the Permian basin: there are lots of refineries in west Texas and New Mexico.

Well yeah, US industry is down to pathetic low levels, but thats not the only thing its used for.
Who said it would all be exported, other than you?
I’ve seen people on TV talking about energy say we’d refine some of it.

Do you know more than them, too?

Aren’t there American jobs in building & maintaining pipelines? Would getting it to overseas ports to be refined less expensively through pipelines lower costs and reduce pollution? You dont seem to want to address these issues.

That is surprising. E85 is currently more expensive than E10 here.
Yes... I did a double take too.

Next time I go by will snap a picture.

I'm not seeing many flex fuel vehicles these days.

Some of our more vulnerable people on small/fixed incomes in small mobile homes heat them with Kerosene, which has doubled in price in the last 1.5 years. Wonder what they will do when it gets cold?

“If you live in the Midwest, you almost certainly fill your tank with tar sands oil.”

We have many refineries in the US to refine Canadian tar sands oil. Read here:

This oil can be refined and sold at profits to whomever in the world wants to buy it.
