Yeah, grass fed brings more here as well. No one I deal with wants strictly grass fed
There is a strong local market for 100% grass fed, and a premium for belted galloway grass fed beef.
Here is a local family that has built up a great following;

All the best,

Peter

Mine are grass on grass up until about 4 months. then, they're on grass, and fed grain twice a day. Morning and afternoon until it's their time to go.
Funny how they all run up to be fed in the am and again in the pm not knowing what their fate will be.
I sometimes wonder if they think I'm feeding them because I like them. lol

Reminds me of me giving my neighbor food from our garden in 1999. He joked that "shouldn't you be saving that for y2k?" I told him "All I have to do is keep you fat and happy." and gave him a wink. He had to think about that one for a while. 🤣

Our friends that raise beef and pork have had mixed results with happy pigs. Some years they come right up wagging their little tails and smiling at them. Other years the pigs are mean and nasty and slam the fences. So some years it's harder to take in the happy pigs and some years he can't wait to see them gone.

I never had a steer that I wasn’t happy to take to the packers. They sure aren’t pets by the time they are 1100#.

We wait for sales and stock the freezer. About 3 weeks ago we bought 80/20 ground chuck for 2.99/lb. Last week we bought 80/20 ground beef for 1.99/lb. We also stocked up on t-bones for 7.99 and chick thighs for 1.29. All those purchases were at Meijer. The t-bones are delicious, some of the best we've had.

I buy beef from the "used meat" section at the store, or whatever is on sale, and grind it myself. I have been doing this for 40+ years. Not only is it cheaper by a long shot, I can also vary the fat content, with burger meant for the grill having more fat, but it also tastes better. Even the cheapest cut of meat tastes better than store bought. Tri-Tip, by the way, makes excellent tasting burger.

I needed some hamburger for tomorrow. 93% lean was $6.12/pound.
I do have a grinder and I'll have to start checking other cuts of meat.

I’ve only raised about a dozen plus the two I have now but so far have never had one which wasn’t friendly. Perhaps because they always come from the same place? One of my current piglets did nip at my dog but I put a stop to that in a hurry.
They’re just like dogs only smarter, and I won’t keep a mean animal on the place.

Been back in the Philippines for a few months now so I have no clue what state side prices are now. My son and daughter are to arrive here in about a week and she is bring me 3 sticks of summer sausage (hopefully one pound sticks). I'll be good for a week.
