I imagine this would be extremely time consuming to be involved with. Put some extra work hours in instead, earn some extra money, and put it towards what you really want without the uncertainty, hassle, and worry.

Exactly! I'm old enough to remember when Field and Stream, Sports Afield and a myriad of other magazines ran ads for "Military Jeeps, $40.00." I never knew anyone who bought one, but one of the HS shop teachers got into a bit of trouble for trying to organize a purchase similar to the OP. I don't think he did anything malicious; rather, he bought into the advertising and trued to get students involved.
