It seemed like a nice afternoon to go out and pick up some of the limb wood that I left on the ground last winter. Picked up a strong 1/4 cord. Any day in the woods is a good day.

What's that, about 1/3 of a cord? Nice load, that will help with the heating bill next winter. 👍

Limbs you say. ;)

Probably not quite a 1/3 cord but pushing it jstpssng.
They were limbs except for one recent dead blow down cherry in the front row.

I use the M5640 in the the woods now mostly. I happened to have the carry-all on the L3010 and decided to use that. It was interesting how insecure I felt and how careful I had to drive running that small tractor with a good load on it (for it anyway) on my rough rocky trails. Something I did all the time for years. Now that I can compare the two I can say that the bigger tractor is definitely much much safer in the woods.

Interesting realization. I recently rode an old Honda 3 wheeler, late 80's vintage & I was reminded why they were done away with. I didn't have any incidents, but being so unstable over rocks and side slopes, made me glad they added the 4th wheel. Only 3 wheels makes the machine turn downhill on side slopes even at slow speeds, and nose downhill gives a different pucker factor if your balance isn't right on. Don't get me wrong, I had a lot of fun, but I do favor the larger and heavier 4 wheelers.

I hear you Loader. When I skidded logs with the L3010 with a geared transmission I would set the hand throttle for about 1800 RPM and use low range, 2nd gear. I needed my right foot free all the time for the steering brakes or the diff-lock and I needed the left foot ready to hit the clutch when things started getting to hairy. Now with the M5640 handling bigger logs/hitches it is seldom that I need either the steering brakes or diff-lock and I hardly feel the holes and rocks that I thought would tip the L3010 over.

What do you use each for? I think I’ve only seen the smaller kubota with the winch on it. If not for firewood anymore. What’s it used for mainly?

In 1999 we bought a large woodlot one mile as the crow flies from where we lived. In 2000 my wife and I started building a house on it with a long drive way that was a logging haul road through the property. In 2001 we moved on to the property and into the Unfinished basement with the house framed and weather tight above. I bought the L3010 with a rear blade and winch, my first tractor, to do road maintenance, improvement, and firewood. All was fine for many years but I realized a bigger tractor would be to my advantage and safer. It took me a long time before I found what I wanted and in the spring of 2017 I bought a used M5640. By that time I had the L3010 set up the way I wanted and it didn't owe me anything so I kept it and now have the luxury of two tractors.

Here is a couple pictures of the M5640

Nice, I had a 3010 when I was in colorado , went a little bigger with my present L3540.. lots of times I wish it were bigger, but for what I do I cant justify the expense.

Well I finally finished my latest project, A table for around the pool to replace one that a storm destroyed a while back. The top and stretcher is out of sweetgum, the legs are oak along with the half round used to anchor the umbrella underneath. Oh, and the pins to hold the stretcher. The wife liked the bark on the sweetgum and after a bit more than a year of drying the bark was still tight so I left it on.

In the process of fitting it in the garage.

And its little space in the corner of the pool deck.

Nice job! 👍 I envy people with the talent and patience to produce nice things like that.

Oooo.. Mr Hunt, so fancy! :) Same thing I always use and have for many many years... Helmsman's Spar Varnish.

And I needed something with some weight to it.. that oak half round did the trick.

Thanks... such a pain sometimes, but the end result is normally worth it.
My first try at a pegged stretcher.. interesting work.

It's pretty neat when you can go out and cut some trees and turn them into something like that Hunt. (y) Very nice.

Did you glue the stretchers too or just rely on the tapered pegs like in old times ?

Thanks Gordon. And it is pretty neat turning trees on the property into "stuff" !
No glue on the stretcher, just the pegs on the end. With the slightly offset hole for the pegs I was a little amazed how tight it all got! We will see how it holds up outside in the elements.
