Re Drew’s story comment. Not just Drew, I serious enjoy reading everybody’s story. Such a variety of lifelong experiences and often they’ll stir my own memory.
Factory worker - I too worked a production line when young, started 2nd shift, sometimes overtime on 3rd, even a stint on 1st. Making foam parts for cars, think dashboards, visors, armrests, seat cushions. Large steam heated molds that were heated, prepped and cooled each cycle. Piecework quota for pay. Even spirt about 1 inch scar across left wrist from saying/doing something to the cute girl trimming cushions. She responded with her box cutter knife. Fortunately we weren’t fired and it didn’t ruin our friendship. Even smitten by the beautiful gorgeous blonde that worked 3rd shift (hence so much overtime).
Summers were invariable stifling, winter not much better, but perhaps the best local company to work for as for pay etc.
That job was held for my return from the Army and I immediately was back to work. I knew I didn’t want to stay on production lines. I was able to get a position as a tech in the research and development lab. Plastics coatings. My own lab shared with 1 then 2 other techs in a brand new facility. My boss’s office was located on farside of the building. A great job for a number of years, about 5 as I recall. I was instrumental in solving one the company’s greatest problems (story for another time), but workplace politics took precedence and I quit months after. Also learned that my work years before age 30 didn’t count toward retirement which I felt rather strange.
Anyway, I suspect most of us have done many things noone would even guess.
Keep it up.
