It didn't happen 40 years ago. Other than hippies panhandling for spare change, I had never seen a beggar on the street in America. The first time I ever heard of a renter stripping wiring and plumbing out of a house to sell the copper was about '87 or '88. By 20 years ago I was seeing guys who inherited a free house from their parents and trashed it until it fell down around them.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose.
A lot thought this, a lot of young men came back being spit on . . . some remember.

A guy and his wife rented a house up the road from me for about 5 years or so. When they moved out, the owner found that he had not paid for trash pickup during that time. Instead he literally stood at the top of the basement steps and threw the bags of garbage down into the basement. 5 years worth!

The owner wound up bulldozing the place.
IJ . . . the owner is not all that smart.

We also have mandatory garbage and owner of record is billed with lien by city if behind… still trash accumulates.

Brother rented a home to a family that turned the place into s as grow operation…

Plastic tarps over refinished hardwood and ventilation ducts cut throughout.

He was telling me they always came to his work and paid in cash on the first and never called with any problems…

He got a call from Sheriff and the following day it was in the newspaper…

That was a fun one as had to get a new certificate of occupancy and multiple permits plus all new utilities.

In the end not much happened as growing is “Legal” in certain conditions but not in a residential area…

Could not prove sales d St o in the end I think it was all misdemeanor stuff.

Brother went after them and was able to collect some.

The issue was if he was involved he could have lost the property… scary stuff.

Nine months from move in to Sheriff… he got a $1000 selling the grow lamps and hydroponics…

Yes it did. What happened to my grandparents' houses was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s until they finally got rid of them.

We bought 20 acres about 9 miles out of town back in 1989. There were three houses across the highway from it. Nothing else around. Spoke to the elderly woman across the street. She said her husband got mugged on their front porch!

Over the next 15 years, the house to the west of them had a string of renters/owners. The last one's were crack addicts. They left a pile of diapers outside of their bedroom window that leaned up against the house as high as the window.

Elderly neighbor could smell it 100 yards away. She called health department and cops. People got evicted and arrested. Health department told landlord to clean up the mess. He brought in a bobcat and moved the pile of diapers to the rear of the lot. That's all.

Finally, meth addicts moved in, contaminated the house, it got condemned, and when they tore it down they took the 2-3 year old diaper pile with them. Now it's a vacant lot, which is fine with everyone nearby.

Wow, you can't make this stuff up.
Where do you think TV shows like Law and Order get their material? It would take a special kind of depraved mind to think this stuff up. But it happens in real life every day.

It's been going on forever. However, and I've talked about this before, just in my lifetime, the US population has doubled. So if 10% of the population are degenerates, even though the percentage hasn't changed, there are twice as many in the same space. So you're more likely to be closer to it.

That, and the speed of mass communications, makes it seem like there is more crime. Well, there are numerically more crimes, but the percentage doesn't show it as well, because it's the same 10% that are doing it.

(10% being a number pulled out of my, um, hat, but you get the drift).

Here crime and vagrants are replacing it's the economy as the primary local issue... Vagrants not even on the radar 25 years ago.

Abandoned cars on public streets for over a year with strings of tickets, trash dumping, burglars, smash and grab, auto theft, graffiti, etc, are called quality of life issues because it's only property

Armed Hold Ups, Shootings, etc dominate news cycles often with groups targeted... lately Asians.

It's amusing that the most important issues are often ignored or put to the side but always time to write new laws affecting property owners...

Don't get me started on perps getting arrested and out in 24 hours getting arrested again... it's a cycle demoralizing police and all departments way understaffed as officers retire out of state in drives... Idaho must be the safest state in the union with do many retired LEOs

I never thought I would be a law breaker but I have used my Brush Cutter to clear vegetation under the supervision of the the fire department knowing even starting it in city limits is now a violation

Amazing the changes you've witnessed out there.

We have here as well, but not to that extent, yet.

Yep. However, talking to older family members over the years, they saw a lot of changes that weren't for the better as well over their lives. When I was a kid in the 60's they had what was called "Urban Renewal". Basically, they took poor neighborhoods with eminent domain and tore everything down and sold it to private companies. And they had redlining, directing minorities and low income people to specific parts of town VS the nicer areas. And I recall quite a bit of racism in our neighborhood. And race riots at the local high schools.

Now we have a lot of homeless issues, but we had homeless people back then, too. We called them bums. Mom called them hobos. Either way, they were loner guys with some mental issues. And as I've mentioned before, the population has doubled, and so the problems have as well.

Remember driving though Gary and the south side of Chicago as a kid. Major problems then, just as today.

Maybe Oakland being diverse it was not as pronounced?

Dad's grade school years were 1930's and his classmates were African American, Asian, Native American.

Those that had a problem with race probably did not live here?

Growing up there were 2 white families on the block so you could say I have been a minority all my life

Always have had the best of neighbors... teachers, letter carriers, supervisors, accountants, a lawyer, etc... many professionals and all educated...

The local church was actually kind of amazing looking back as an adult... 2 California Supreme court judges, Oakland and San Francisco Police Chiefs, Head of the Community College District, Lots of Doctors, etc... all in a small East Oakland Catholic Church...

One thing we did not have is Homeless Camps or syringes laying in the playground... crime was responded to quickly and neighborhoods encouraged to report suspicious activity...

Nice! Our school had two African American kids in the 8 years I was there. All white neighborhoods, too. However, my parents had a very diverse group of friends and business acquaintances, and my mom put me in city-sponsored summer programs that were highly integrated. Plus my older siblings all had a diverse group of friends through their summer jobs as lifeguards at city pools and beaches, where I eventually got my first jobs. Plus, my parents were mentors to high school and college students from all over the world. So overall, I had a pretty good interaction with a lot of people from very different backgrounds than my own as a child.

Some people don't have any water except the little bit they can collect from a roof gutter. The local Coke plant gets all they want though.
