What gave 60's Greyhounds their distinctive smell

I've got two "Drip-Troits", a 6-71 in a 4104 GMC, and a 6V92 in a White cab-over. Both have the "Sound" and the "smell". They still work and I plan on keeping it that way.

Never been on a Greyhound, but you could blindfold me and stick me into an old VW Beetle, and I could tell you where I was from the smell alone. I haven't been in a vintage Beetle in probably close to 40 years, my mom sold hers in the late 1970's, and only a few friends had them in high school. But I can still smell that wax in my mind, that they used to rustproof them with.
Last time I went to an antique car show, I noticed that the interior of one or two smelled just like some of the old prewar bangers my dad used to drive to work. I think the smell came from some kind of adhesive in the upholstery. Wish I knew for sure.

A friend of mine had a John Deere with a Detroit Diesel engine. I think it was the same model as the one in the video.

I used to think it was the upholstery, too, until I read several statements about it actually coming from wax used for rustproofing their bodies.

Old 1970's Audi's had a pretty similar smell, described by many as the smell of Crayons.

It smells like it could be wax. Was it applied at the factory? As far as I know, after market rust proofing isn't a big thing in here in SC. I don't even know where I'd go to have it applied.

All my diesels have a unique smell.

The new diesels with common rail and pilot injection (deleted BTW) have a very distinct smell compared to my injection pump diesels which even smell different from my HEUI injected diesels.

Basically, it all comes down to what type of fuel deliver and injection type you have. Some burn more complete than others...

I love those old 2 stroke GM's.

I can remember those were in the cattle trucks hauling off the cattle in the fall. Those guys would drive them down to the meadows to load the cows. Coming out the meadows they would have to use all the power and gears they had. Could hear them for miles going out.

Amazing drivers.
