I made cowboy coffee using an enamel 3 qt coffee pot I bought off of Amazon.
If you have a gas stove its easier to control the boil. I have an electric stove and have watch it like a hawk as I adjust the temperature from a boil to a rolling boil (generally High setting to about 3.5 setting on my stove)
Basically start the heat on high.
Once the water starts to get fairly warm (about 5 minutes) add coffee. I use 1/4 cup of McCafe ground coffee per qt of water.
Then bring water and coffee to boil in pot.
Be careful to lower heat quickly so that the pot doesn't boil over and it's just a rolling boil.
Rolling boil for about 5 minutes. Turn off heat and let sit a minute. Pour a little bit of cold water down the spout to wash out the grounds and settle the coffee to the bottom.
Enjoy.
The best coffee I've had in 30 yrs of drinking coffee.
Hint: I do cheat and use a metal coffee strainer so that I don't get any grounds in my cup.

Basically bring water to boil in pot, Add 1/4 ground coffee to each qt of water. It's best to use coarse ground coffee. I used McDonalds McCafe ground coffee.

Metal coffee strainer???

We would call that Finnish coffee if you didn't strain it.

This is a good way to make coffee taste excellent ! I will agree on the flavor this way, but I would miss out on spitting the grounds out. Old habits just die hard.

We hold equestrian events and I often make 'cowboy coffee' for attendees. If you pour some cold water around the rim and spout before serving, all the grounds sink to the bottom so no need to strain. I learnt from Kent Rollins on youtube, worth a watch.

I believe Kent Rollins says not to put anything in the coffee (egg shells, cold water, etc). If I were to knock the grounds out of the spout I would use boiling water.
The filter is not a big deal and allows you to enjoy all the coffee without worrying about grounds.
The big part of this brew process is the smoothness.

Yes it is the smoothest coffee for sure. Kent does say to pour cold water around the rim and spout to sink the grounds. Works too. But yes, he does say not to use egg, horse shoes etc!

You're right. Watching the video "How to make Cowboy Coffee" with Kent Rollins. Around the 10:00 mark he says to pour a little cold water.
With the filter it really doesn't matter but if you are out on the ranch then this would be beneficial.

Really?, not bitter?
I used to be a Timmies' addict, in the past month I've noticed it getting a lot weaker, probably the 'shrinkflation' rearing it's head in either they're adding more water or the pouched coffee quantity is less.
I just may try it and yes, I do adulterate it with cream and sugar.....sorry as I understand that is the next best thing to murder for a coffee aficionado :)

I've tried most pour over methods, percolator, regular coffee pot, Bunn coffee maker, french press.

Cowboy coffee is the smoothest coffee I've tasted. Only con is the amount of attention it takes to make it.

Can I just use a stainless steel pot with or without the lid?

Supposedly the enamel coffee pot should be "seasoned" and the more you make cowboy coffee the more seasoned the pot becomes.
When washing the pot only rinse with water and let dry with the pot upside down.
Don't know if stainless steel can be seasoned. Maybe enamel was used in the 19th century because that was the material available at the time?

Time to go digging in my grandpa's old camping stuff. I'm pretty sure there is an old enamel pot in there.

Cream and sugar? ..... Try that on a cattle drive and you'll get tied to a cactus and left for the vultures 😂

Just like my cast iron skillets and dutch ovens, the coffee pot only sees hot water, never soap. ..... but I don't oil the coffee pot 😁
As long as you don't boil it again, you can keep it hot for a long while without it spoiling. I put the pot on a flat iron griddle with low heat under the other end of the griddle. Works great.

Hello All-

A former acquaintance of mine has gotten me interested in making some cowboy coffee. Problem being that I can't contact her any longer. I don't know just where to look for a pot and not real clear on how to run the thing. Now that the fall and cold weather is setting in, I want some now more then ever. So any help would be greatly be appreciated. Who knows if I'm even going to make any coffee, might just break out the 100proof Southern Comfort

You can get the same good coffee taste without the grounds by using a percolator.
That's what I use. It took me a long time to learn NOT to boil the water when using my stove top perc. Now I have an electric unit and make coffee every other day. The unused portion goes into the fridge. Next morning I add a few more grounds and water, reperc and throw out what I don't drink.

This is how I drink my cowboy coffee everyday. I boil water and than pour it into a pint or quart mason jar with grounds and lid, stir once, after the coffee grounds sink to the bottom it's ready.

So, a cinnamon latte with whipped cream and a dash of milk wouldn’t be available?
