Pretty sure it was the E model JD compact tractors with aluminum rear ends.

I doubt it. But the way progress happens is that someone flies in the face of convention. Sometimes it works, and sometimes not.
Where it is working right now is in the Sprinter commercial vans. They have all aluminum Mercedes Benz turbo diesel engines. Tiny very powerful engines. The whole Sprinter Van and Sprinter powered RVs are incredibly long-lived and reliable. Rarely need maintenance, and popular for economy in spite of the purchase price. But they are throw aways, not easily rebuilt.

Wow, jjeff! Are they actually making axle castings out of aluminum on some tractors, now? A pump housing, I can understand. But an axle is a vastly different situation.

Unsure but wouldn't surprise me in the least to see it happening I was drifting and mostly referring to cheap thin pressed steel on big box store riders for front axles.

Rear axle housing cracked on Deere 4300​

Hello, I recently took the wheels off my tractor to install the third scv and found that the bolt holding the retainer onto the rear axle housing had broken off along with a chunk of the aluminum housing. I've had the tractor for about a year with no major problems and I probably wouldn't have even noticed if I didn't install the scv. I'm in the process of taking the axle housing off now but wanted to get some opinions on how to proceed. New housings are still available but are about $1,000 each. Any other options? Thanks

I suppose weight was a consideration if you want to tow your sub compact tractor with the family minivan or crossover, aluminium component laden tractors are your friend lol.

I'd guess it was cost of the casting, not weight.

Interesting if the Deere 3E's use aluminum. I'll check my 3R tonight, if our weather holds.
