I'm amazed that guy you bought the Rikon wood lathe from didn't have a fire in his shop.
do you have a dust collection system for it?

I was also, seemed a bit silly
He had poly etc all over lathe so that adds to the hazard

I do have DC set up, I need a chuck to get myself operational

Dust collection on a lathe is quite a challenge. If you make something big enough to catch chips from longer pieces, then the face velocity is so low that only stuff that shoots directly into it will get sucked up. You can try, but your best bet is to sweep up after you are done, and wear a respirator, especially if it is something that be be troublesome to breathe.

that makes sense, if velocity was high enough to cover that whole area would likely
suck in things you don't want...plus be seriously noisy

3 hrs of fun to make a 3$ hook. The wife just shook her head.




The little terror is also doing well

Nothing that a nerf gun or squirt gun can't handle. My kitty scrams whenever she sees me getting the blue air line out to air up something. a blast of compressed air keeps her far away.

First was the rear thruster. Only 2 years old and needed another rebuild. Vetus quality has really gone downhill.

Fix that and pop in and just happen to test bow unit, No go.


What are the odds both units failing? Lol

The bow unit (an older Vetus/much better quality, and made to be easily serviceable) was an easy fix. Just a short across a brush wire that then melted a strap.

thrusters should be reliable, pretty simple direct drive motor
did water get in it?
never had one, 25 ton Bertram did not move around much, and with big props
handled well. but there were times I sure wish I had one, particularly with wind blowing
you off the dock. If your deck hand aka wife gets that first line on as you hope, all is well.
When she misses, and you start floating away, well that's when pushing that toggle switch would
sure be nice.

when you put them back in, do you have to recaulk or regasket?

No, they just unbolt from housing.

Never wet but bildge is humid. The uncoated crap metal that vetus chose to house the brushes (in on the new unit)corroded so bad I had to drive the brushes out with a drift.

The front thruster ( same bildge exposure, looked awesome after maybe 20 years)

In that one, the wire coating on 2 brushes aged, so easy fix.

The rear, I coated the “metal” with a silicone dielectric grease after polishing the corrosion (and bought a backup unit as I have zero faith in this newer design)

I'm always enjoying watching you on your projects. I sometimes wonder "Where the heck did he find something like that?" on some of your unique "stuff".

Whatever happened to the wheeled excavator? What fast car do you have these days? Do you still have that rare yanmar or whatever thing that was?

I've been a big fan of Swarovski Optiks since I bought my 10x50's back in the 1990's for almost a grand from the Cabela's catalog. I sure did enjoy getting those catalogs!!! It was crazy expensive back then, but well worth it considering how well they work.

I just looked at current prices. Wow!!

Kyle, the wheeled ex is still here. I’m fearful of teaching the wife how to operate as she would dig me a grave as her first project.

No more fast cars. That old (cheap) 2001 Porsche above has been a lot of affordable fun.

I kept the yammar as anything that makes my life easier likely has to stay around to help me.

Retirement and a medical condition have slowed me down. I have to plan a lot more and monitor myself to avoid injury
