Mahindra 5155 Anyone?

good to know but i would expect the filter to clean up any filings that changing the fluid would catch, and water which is only going to come out by heating the fluid and gets back in from sitting should not be an issue, had not thought of the cheap fluid.
I will change that at next opportunity.
All water is an issue whether it’d be emulsified, free or dissolved.

Studies have shown that even with dissolved water, bearing life was reduced by a factor of 5 and as you know, hydraulic fluid in tractors just isn’t for the hydraulic part of the tractor.

New tractors coming from various parts of the world, have sat outside in all kinds of weather, humidity and other climate particulars before anyone bought them so water inclusion has had ample opportunity to infiltrate systems.

yes it is and water starts getting back in as soon as you open the bottle to pour it in the tractor, your defence it to get the fluid hot and boil off the water in the fluid. nothing new there and i get mine hot enough to burn it off on a regular basis. i'm not to worried about that issue but had never heard that the manufacturers used substandard fluid for the factory fill.

It's not substandard. It's considered temporary. I mean you gotta have something in there for it to move from assembly to stock yard. Its simply one of those unspoken manufacturer's particulars you never hear of. I heard it because I work at a tractor place or else I wouldn't have either.
It simply does not have the extent of protection ingredients of the better quality oils and is why they recommend you getting it out sooner than later.
Tractor makers use thousands of gallons of oil so as to keep costs down, they'll use a cheaper oil just to get the tractor to you. Why put in $200 oil if $50 oil will suffice for that job and wanting you to flush it out anyway to get contaminants out?

As you infer, it is impossible not to get some water in a hydraulic system. You really cannot compare your example of water infiltration however, to a tractor sitting out in the elements for who knows how long before it gets to you.
Hydraulic systems often involve small orifices, which can cause cavitation and thus, localized boiling. This cavitation has the same effects as boiling and can cause pitting damage to the components near the cavitated region so the less stuff to burn off, the less chance of damage.
90% of hydraulic system failure, relates to water in the system.

I've given you the substantiated reasons for all of this but as I've said, it's your tractor to do with whatever you wish.

Finding yaupon holly to be a royal pain while bush hogging, they pull pins. Luckily found this one lying on the pto cover, the little spring was nearby.
Anyone want to guess where it goes?

I get you and will replace my hydraulic oil at the next opportunity, but i do not agree with you assessment about water in the oil. the only defence against water accumulating in the oil is running it and getting it hot, if the first 50hrs of operation did not do that then it will not for the next 300 so i would be stuck with replacing the oil every 6 months (not happening).

I respect your opinion and listen to it, but in this case i do not agree with you on this point.
thanks for the info about the use of breakin oil at the factory, i had assumed they used the recommended hydraulic oil for the factory fill and my dealer did not think that it was an issue.

Ok that’s fine you cannot agree. My thoughts came from studies on hydraulics l’ve had the opportunity to study at the dealership.
Water indeed in systems, causes the most failures in said systems. Our tractors before we got them, were outside in all kinds of elements from monsoons, tropical storms, the ocean moisture and humidity.
My tractor is inside. I’ve had no problem changing out hydro oil every 500 hrs in this New England climate. It lives a different life from whence it came so take what l say and know with a grain of salt. I have.

Just joined up here. I bought a 5155 Monday from East Rutherford Equipment in Ellenboro NC. Super nice folks to deal with. I've got 6 hours already just Bush hogging. I'm super impressed so far with this tractor. Seems to be very well built and tough as nails. I appreciate all the info on this forum.

Awesome and welcome! Every time I use mine I’m glad I bought it. It’s a real brute but it handles very well. Keep up updated as you get more seat time.
