Tree cutting accident

   / Tree cutting accident #43
For many years I helped my Dad cut trees for firewood. Then when he retired I ran a business. One day this college student customer said he was looking for a part time job so I called Dad who said sure, I could use help.
Later that evening I asked Dad how it went. Okay he said, except at one point the young man leaned into the running saw blade shredding the crotch of his pants! Dad asked if he was OK, and if his "stuff" was alright.
He said all was well "everything hid up his behind".

Some online safety courses and books (as above).
Spent time around lumberjacks when we were up on MA and learned some of what not to do.
Spent a lot of time asking local tree people and online asking questions.
about 5-6 years total saw work as a homeowner, less than one doing jobs for others when I was younger.

So I still call in the pros on trees close to the house or power lines. But I do the rest with heavy caution and some I leave to fall if not close to where people are.
Some I will be roping this winter to get the bigger branches down so I can reopen my tiny trail system. Too many trees dropping branches (Ash) so I just practice avoidance for now.

I wonder how many are "first time" users or never had any training/experience?
Same thing with new motorcycle riders.

I used to teach motorcycle safety. Riders would arrive just before our 8am class. Sometimes they had to wait in the center lane until oncoming traffic cleared. When I could I would watch their arrivals.

More than once I saw new riders slow down in the center lane and fall over before the oncoming vehicle cleared. Splayed out in the center lane. Yikes those riders needed the training but had no business riding a motorcycle enroute to receive it.

I'm sure many of those also operated chain saws ....

Forest service?
It was a certification to be able to cut trees on our local mountain biking trails. It was done by a guy who is certified by the forest service but I do not think it was a forest service cert. (my brother just got that one). It was a couple of years ago, I would have to look who the certifying agency is.
