Can we clean it up?

I'm way on the right hand side of the political spectrum but I do not see any problem with the moderation here. As a forum owner/mod you deal with your user base. Complaints are addressed right or wrong. Everyone's view is colored by their life experiences, we are not all same same nor should we be.

I do NOT see major suppression of either side or only one way traffic.

Ditto. I tend to lean right in all areas except some of the finer points on environmental policy, but I haven't noticed moderation being heavy-handed on either side of the spectrum.

Rather than whinge about people inserting politics into everything we care to talk about, it would be better to question why politics has inserted itself into everything we care to talk about.
As stated previously, basically nothing can be discussed without a tinge of politics affecting it.
"I had to buy a new gas can, and now it takes 20 minutes to fill my mower and I spill about a third of it all because..."

"Man, have you seen the videos from the border? I tell you what..."
"derr, politicks! Kill him with fire!"
When you allow politics to control every aspect of life, and then curtail talking about it, that effectively controls the narrative, and everyone who's ever read a couple chapters of a history book sees where that leads.

Best at what? Jimmy Carter was really good with rising interest rates and botched policy. They’ve all left a mark, good from bad is hard to tell sometimes.

Well, let’s see he won by huge margins, 49 states in one election I believe. he took over from a failed Carter administration with 20% interest rates, runaway inflation and a fuel crisis (sound familiar?), he ended the eastern bloc Soviet dominated countries, tore down the Wall, restored our military to #1 status and didn’t get involved in foreign wars.

Maybe I missed something, but I think that’s purty good overall.

Yes, he did it all while dealing with a Congress that was dominated by the other party.

Not gonna happen on this forum, anytime soon. However it does happen on the Smith and Wesson forum I linked in one of my first posts and it happens every day too.

I've often wondered what such discussions would be like without hiding behind the internet. Heck I've seen old ladies swear when talking about politics.....and they were in the church choir. I've never gotten riled that much about these things. I just faithfully vote and do the rest of my duties to the best of my ability.

Sometimes the choices are poor when voting. But I admire anyone that is honestly trying to fill such a public position. I couldn't hold down such a position...probably should include other professions considering my personalty...e.g. peace time Army, doctor...lawyer etc.

We could have done well with the information the web gave us but without the individual anonymity social media provides.

A little humor here - this is the first site where I made up an un-revealing 'where's Waldo' screen name after several years posting in my own name on Fidonet and early Usenet - car forums for Trooper, Subaru, others. Forums for Novell Netware, early Ethernet and then WiFi, etc. Alt Folklore Computers and Alt Folklore Urban forums on Usenet in particular, where I think my comments on Y2K prep can still be found. All using my real name and plenty of context revealing where I lived and worked. Never a problem.

Until:

Someone invented a spammer program that harvested all of Usenet's users. Not just Posting Name but also the Reply To etc fields. It was first used to flood Usenet groups and make them unusable.

Then - My email - also my real name - suddenly received bounce messages from 10,000 different ISP's, "Recipient XXX not known here". The named recipient and the text "I" was claimed to have sent was different in every single message. Somebody had put my Reply To in their Viagra spam that was sent worldwide. With every field randomized using real data, to make filtering unusable.

I also got a few real replies mostly "take me off your list". Plus a couple of classics: "I hadn't told anyone about our problem, how did you find out?". Best was a woman in the public-facing tourism department of some Southern state who was outraged that 'her little problem' was now being giggled about, around her office.

Ok, time to recognize the age of Internet innocence had passed and it's time for others to rely solely on what I type to get their impression of me.

More recently, 'doxing', revealing names and addresses of grand jury members etc as well as online posters, is having real consequences. The guy who beat Pelosi's elderly husband wasn't there for a random burglary. Posting anonymously along with secure passwords for financial info and even home WiFi, are simply part of the modern world now.
