There is something about being in the forest that helps us mentally or even looking at one, you add a fire to that and its better then any pill or therapy, in the forest (at least for me) there is no stress, no time (only hours before daylight or sunset) no worries... just life, nature and what need to be done and what's left to do. Then you put a tractor in the mix and what else can you ask for?

Me this weekend for six hours helping a buddy of mine clear out drought stricken fur trees that was dying, then skidding them 1/4 mile away next to the road to be taken to the mill.

I love this thread. I’m not sure why, I cut some firewood, maybe 2 chords a year at the most but I like looking at other peoples pictures. Rockabadchild’s picture with the dogs, snow and tractor is a good one.

Did another 2 face cords today. I have a couple of hours of work left and I am done processing all the wood I have except the logs that are too big or twisted for the processor.

Will need to order another 20 loggers cords and be ready for spring next year. Then if the weather holds out, I will clear space to store another 20 logger cords. 40 loggers cords should get me 35 cords of wood.

Bidding on a city truck with an 8 ft dump box. It will carry two face cords loose stacked.

Love making firewood.

I got a pleasant surprise today. My log trucker sent me the hemlock pulp check for the pulp we cut a few weeks back and gross pay is up to $49/ton. Quite an increase compared to pine which was $30/ton last year.

About the only thing that hemlock and pine pulp are good for here is biomass... and you have to be close to the buyer to make it worthwhile.

The pine pellet mill is only about 25 miles from my landing but the hemlock paper mill is an hour and a half. My trucker is a straight shooter and charges a fair rate. And with the triaxle and pup trailer he can haul a big load

Another really nice day here today so I thought I'd build the last half cord firewood box that I need,

I now have plenty of them, and after I do some hunting, I'll be filling them up.

I have some white oak to split, and I want it in these boxes as the way these boxes are designed, the oak splits dry faster than putting them in other containers I've tried.

Yesterday I learned I was high bidder on a truck I wanted for my firewood side gig. It is a 2007 F250 regular cab, 8' bed, 4X4 that was in the city fleet. It has the 5.4 Triton engine. Not a great engine but it is a new crate engine with only 9000 miles on it. 69k miles on the truck. Frame is in great shape and the truck runs very well. Needs new tires.

Truck comes with a like new Western MPV3 plow with Ultra mount 2 and a dump bed. The plow retails for $9k

It was a sealed bid sale. I bid $15.8k, next highest bid was $15.1k. I think I was lucky to get it. Time will tell.

I will likely sell my 74" pull type snowblower. Might even sell my cabbed LS4140 and replace it with a smaller TYM 2515. I have modified how I handle firewood and no longer need over 2500 lbs of FEL capacity.

Burn mostly oak. In my area takes about two years to get bone dry. Sure can tell the difference in heat output burning well seasoned wood. Have the last of 8-9year old seasoned wood ready by the wood stove. No kindling needed. Just a couple sheets of newspaper to start a fire. In the winter is easier to go outside to work knowing there is warm stove to thaw next to.

I wonder if they let it run low on oil, the Ford Modular engines should last a long time if maintained.

I got to talk to two guys who work for the city, who brought over the key for the test drive. They said the dealer broke a couple of spark plugs and had to replace the heads and then some other stuff happened, or was found, and that was why a new engine was needed. They seemed reluctant to give more details and I let it drop.

They had no skin in the game, so I believed them when they told it me it had been a great vehicle. The city is moving to lease vehicles and selling off stuff.

I believe that's a common problem when changing plugs on that engine, especially the older model years.

I had a 2006 ( I believe ) it had an issue with the plugs, not broken but extremely hard to remove, had to take it to a dealership. First private shop could not do it!

I knew there was something different on the newer trucks to remedy the problem.
Of course, going 100k miles ( or longer) between plug changes still beats "the good old days."
