Snow blower chute rotate

Sorry this is cross posted as a reply on another thread, wasn’t sure if anyone would see it there.

My 3pt new holland blower has a hand crank that is effectively a winch that pulls a cable wrapped around the chute in order to rotate it . I’m thinking about replacing it with a small 12v atv winch with a remote control.

Has anyone tried this?

I've seen plenty of 12v motor style chute rotation fabrications. Car window motors or hydraulic motors are also a popular choice for that type of setup.
That said, I just added a hydraulic cylinder kit from the mfg, and did rotation and chute deflection at the same time.

If you do that you have to account for the movement of
the chute in the opposite direction.

You would have to be able to spool up the winch cable to
move it left and at the same time and at the same time
unspool cable to allow it to move left and do the same
in reverse to move the chute to the right.

If the cable spool had a separator plate in the center
you would be able to have one half of the cable lay
coming off the top to spool out and the other half
coming off the bottom to allow it to spool back up.

If the winch did not have the cable separated by a barrier
plate in the center of the spool the wire rope would become
tangled up and useless.

If you weld an eye on both sides of the winch drum at the top
that would allow you to use a small shackle and cable clamps
to anchor the cable.

Using a car window motor would be easier but attaching it to the
snow blowers chute rotation shaft would be the main issue.

It's been done on a number of snowblower chutes. It depends on how far a throw is needed. Attach an arm to the chute or a rack and pinion-type arrangement, where the chute itself is the pinion Either that or a small electric motor would be my choice before going to a winch.

I've done it, it works. It's slow.

I'm not a fan of the steel cable chute turners so one of my pet projects is to replace it with either chain or worm gear drive

On my current setup my hand crank is replaced with a hydraulic motor. I have to be careful not to overrun the cables which I tend to accidentally do once a season.

It was for a car seat. It worked OK while I owned it, but it would sometimes need a little help when slush froze the metal-to-metal joint. Once broken free it was fine, but I'd use something with a little more torque if I started over.
