The idea of All in the Family came from a British comedy. Lear's partner saw it, showed him, and they bought the rights. All in the Family still stands the test of time, as some of the best characters and screenplays ever written. The characters upon which that show was created are pure genius, with depth and complexity rarely seen in television history.
That's what made it a hit show, two guys bickering about opposite views of anything and everything and remaining a loving family. The best Norman Lear to me was "Sanford & Son". Redd Foxx was amazing. "All In The Family" I certainly can relate more to Archie than 'Meathead'. Norman Lear did lot's of groundbreaking work but weaved his liberal ideas in the episodes.
