Good for them. Some is OK, but looking back on it now, playing sports taught me more useful
things than being cheap labor on neighbors farms or at the service station.
True that sports is a wonderful teacher. My kids played all the way through the collegiate level.
However, work teaches a lot of even more useful life lessons. People need jobs for the rest of their adult lives. Starting at the bottom like being “cheap labor on a neighbors farm or at the service station” teaches humility and makes these kids realize how lucky they are when they have a better job.

Something I see lacking in today’s kids. Many are spoiled. They want to go to Harvard then get a 6 figure job telling other people what to do. It just creates spoiled, entitled monsters.

I can't tell you how many of my students believed that they would just be an 'influencer' on some platform and make big bucks. A few others we counting on an "e-sports" career.

I was convinced thru high school I would play shortstop for the St Louis Cardinals. My parents never dampened that dream.

However, in the meantime, I was expected to get good grades, work at a part time job and figure out a career just in case.

And maybe they will do those things. During high school I didn't have the slightest idea what followed after. Life after HS came as a complete surprise.

There was way more free time, and it was a lot easier to make a living than I'd expected.

I used to work with a guy who was drafted to pitch for the Cardinals. He was in AA ball and broke his foot in a pickup basketball game. He tried to come back too early and messed up his throwing shoulder. That ended his career.

I have many former students playing various sports in college. Most will never be pros. I told them all to make sure they had a plan just in case (knowing full well they would be unlikely to make money at sports). To be fair, some do make it. There's a current Lions player who went to the HS where I taught. Too many variables to count on that type of career.

I believe the internet has connected us and made our lives easier in some ways, but the garbage kids are reading and where they get their “news” from is truly evil on earth.

Unfortunately way too many kids get hurt playing sports and they
suffer for the rest of their lives

The NCAA says “less than 2% of college athletes make it to the pros”. Logic would say college athletes should be working toward a career outside of sports.

But - my guess - is more than 2% of kids believe they will be a pro and concentrate more on athletics than school. To their future detriment.
