Of course not. You have to be a licensed dealer to buy from the manufacturer.

Ok, I thought I'd start with looking up my John Deere... 440 ic

It does seem to have parts diagrams which is nice. But... either they haven't bothered to backfill the catalog with parts listings, or they don't actually support "All Ages".

And the engine for my 440 was used for several years in a variety of Deeres.

I see other brands at my JD dealer all the time. Their parts guys will will order whatever parts you need if they are available.

Oh, that's right, I could probably use some parts for the Oliver too.

I'm not sure I believe John Deere's advertising.

JD has probably one of if not the best parts network in the world. Part of the reason you pay more for them. Professionals rely on Deere equipment to keep lights on, fuel moving, quarries running, emergency utility services going, pumps, gen sets, everything and 24/7.

As far as service goes, I bought my Kia from a Buick dealer.

They serviced it, including replacing the brakes, before they put it on the lot. It's done all the time.

If you want to pay their high labor rates, they don't turn down your work.

Automobile dealers do generally have networks that enable them get what parts they need, (one hand washes the other), or they may use aftermarket parts, if they have to.

Some sellers have multiple dealerships, and sell other brands, which makes it easy to get competitors parts.

As far as purchasing retail parts goes, you can actually buy Chevy parts from a Buick dealer. Their license allows them to sell you any GM part. But, they can't sell you Ford parts. However, if they happen to also own a ford dealership, they may accommodate you, such as allowing you to pick them up there.

If you want it now, you obviously have to go to a dealer that actually has it on the shelf.
