Ever meet a famous person and not know it…?

I was visiting friends in Grass Valley California and my retired friend was checking under the hood of his motorhome and another similar age gentleman comes walking down the rural road and stops for a moment and they talk and my friend says he is heading out soon to see family in Indiana and the walker says it’s been a long time since he had been back and wished my friend a good trip…

It was only after I learned the walker is General Chuck Yeager on his way home from the little Grass Valley airport.

Not sure of his resting place.

Brigadier General Charles Elwood Yeager, United States Air Force (Retired) died at a hospital in Los Angeles, California, 7 December 2020, at the age of 97 years. His remains are buried at the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Myra, West Virginia.

For a short time when I was a kid I had a after school job selling jeans and shirts in a hip little clothing store in Westport Ct. A high class woman came in and bought 6 shirts and 6 pants for her husband. 2 days later a man came in and dumped all of it in a pile on the counter demanding a credit card refund and left.
Turns out it was Joan Woodward and Paul Newman Movie stars

Returned to his hometown opposed to Arlington or similar...

My good friend and mentor born and raised in Kokomo as was his wife and General Yeager on occasion would sample her rhubarb pie.

Minding the autoparts store as a teen Sonny Barger came in a few times...

Of course he is long gone now and had moved to AZ.

If you grew up in Westport and did any sailing, we probably know some of the same people. My old woodie boat spent most of its long life in Westport, specifically Cedar Point YC.

As to famous encounters, several. None that top Paul Newman, though.

Years ago, I was traveling on the company plane. We were getting ready to leave Teterboro airport.

As unusual, planes were delayed.

I was just sitting minding my own business when a beautiful lady sat next to me. Absolutely stunning.

So, I said hi and we spoke for about 10 minutes until her plane was ready.

In comes Michael Douglas - he says hi to me, are you ready to her, and they walk out to the plane.

It was Catherine Zeta Jones!!

If you grew up in Westport and did any sailing, we probably know some of the same people. My old woodie boat spent most of its long life in Westport, specifically Cedar Point YC.

As to famous encounters, several. None that top Paul Newman, though.

I see you are in Philadelphia. We moved to Westport from Devon, west of Phili. when I was 15. I went to high school there and then lived a few years in the woods of Wilton and West Redding until going to California 46 yrs ago. We did sail. Dad had a Cal26 at Cedar Point. I prefered the ski boat and catamaran. Good times.

In the 70’s my brother’s summer high school job was horseback trail guide at Tahoe.

He was 13 and the casino booked 4 hours for their headliner Olivia Newton John.

He said she was very nice and loved horses and it was just the two of them going up the mountain in direction of heavenly resort… they talked about horses and Tahoe.

Small world. We're separated more by years, than distance! I'm just a short drive north of Devon, not in Philly proper. Been a few years since I've been to CPYC, but I have some friends up there, still.
