snake oil?
Not at all. Nano-Borate is a cleaning additive the cleans an engine internally of deposits left behind from multi grade synthetic lubricants as well as it emulsifies sludge in the oil pan and anywhere else it may accumulate from the constant heat and cool cycles associated with the engine operating parameters.. If you look inside any modern engine that is on a diet of multi-grade synthetic oil, you will observe a bronze colored sheen (deposit) on the interior surfaces. When using Nano- Borate as an oil additive, there is no deposits at all. In fact, last time I had the valve covers off my diesel pickup to replace the injection harness, there was nothing on the heads or in the valve covers at 100K miles. Just as clean inside as when it was new. Same thing with my Kubota M9's. I had them both in the shop last summer for an overhead valve adjustment and when Dennis pulled the valve covers, there was nothing on the top of the head or in the valve covers, no sludge, no varnish and no bronze tint with is always indicative of what transpires when you use a multi grade synthetic oil, which I do (Rotella T6 5-40). It ain't cheap but it works and no I'm not a fan of snake oils at all. In fact that is the only additive I use and I use it in ALL my internal combustion engines, air cooled and water cooled. Call it 'snake oil' if you want, don't much care. All I know is it works and has been working for me for years.

sounds as if you've done the homework, & it could well be. thinking also, since you seem to be a careful routine maintenance guy, your regular high quality engine oil intervals may be doing most of that job as well, hard to say, best regards

Don't really know for sure in reality but Blackstone always tells me my drain oil is good to go. I do a spectro analysis every oil change and have for ever. Only other 'snake oil additive' I use is Powerservice Bio-Kleen biocide in my bulk diesel storage tank. Been down the algae road before and don't want a repeat performance. My diesel pickup truck gets dosed as well.

to me diesel fuel additives are a must. not intending to imply all additives are snake oil, maybe just to start a tangent in the conversation. think we'd both agree how much engine oils have advanced since the stp & rislone days of my youth, regards

My spouse headed out of town with this auto shortly after we got it. I'm now with her and got to drive it a few times. Gee is it comfortable to drive and ride in and the spousal unit is very happy with it.

And what really ticks me off around here is that we have stations that cut off the pump after $75. I hate having to run my credit card twice just to fill up my pickup. Gas is now approaching $5 a gallon, if I put 30 gallons in my F150 that's $150!

Been driving my diesel dually a lot lately....

Since I took the above pic two days ago gasoline has jumped another 9 cents a gallon!
I was in Reno this week and saw regular gas at $4.15 on Friday on my way to the airport. When I returned, I stopped in Albuquerque to fill up on my way home. Regular gas was $2.94 at Costco and $2.99 at C-stores. This is a huge difference. Must be the transportation to Nevada from the CA coast. Of course you are also getting to pay some of the CA taxes that are associated with that fuel.

Edit: it looks like fuel prices have dropped since Friday. See the Gas Buddy report.

All fuel in northern Nevada arrives via an 8" pipeline from California. It goes to a distribution center in Sparks, Nevada (actually part of Reno) where the various distributors' tankers fill up to deliver to their stations. Which is why I always laugh when someone tells me that "X" brand of gas is better than "Z" brand of gas. Hey, it came out of the same tank...different additives are added to the tankers for different brands.

So I doubt transportation costs have much to do with the cost of the fuel. It is the cost of the basic fuel itself, coming out of California. Plus taxes. Washoe County (Reno) adds their own tax on top of state and federal taxes. Washoe County (which borders California) is growing by leaps and bounds from Californians fleeing California so new roads are being built everywhere.

Thanks for the explanation. I was very surprised to see $4 gas in Reno last week.
