I have also placed the spreader from the bottom but have still managed to bend it from time to time. Usually happens when I lift my finish mower up to change the height setting. I guess in 20 years... Well I have heard the mind is first to go.

When you are talking about the spreader do you mean the bar that came with the QH to set the lift arm width?

I was under the impression that should be removed for operation.

Probably should be removed for operating but I am of the age that I try to limit entering and exiting

yup that bar. never saw any documentation saying it needed to be removed, and since there are pins in it tells me just the opposite really. plus with some attachments very hard to remove once hooked up.

Well, no documentation, but looking at videos of them in use I don't usually see the bar in place.

My plan is to set the arm width and then remove the bar before hooking up

One thing I should add to my own comment is that because I have replaced the turnbuckles with telescoping stabilizers the lift arms pretty much stay where I put them once they are adjusted to width.

I destroyed my spreader bar about instantly, because I didn't remove it after hook-up lol.

The spreader bar is intended to be used to align the hooks for connection only, then remove for use of the connected attachment.
Initially I had marked the spreader for my various attachment widths.
But I stopped using the spreader. Now I just get close and set the arms to the desired width, then connect.
That eliminates a fiddly step for me.
I did make a 4" extension for the top link and added a PTO quick connect to the tractor and both mowers which makes connection easier and extended their length.

Quick connect for pto!!! I do despise hooking up the pto most of the time. Seems I can't keep enough lube on the slide. I did slide the cover back (too bad it doesn't easy slide just by following "Press Here") and removed the rolled pin from the yoke. I then slid the driveshaft out of the ujoint yoke and hooked it up by sliding the driveshaft back in and use a spring lock pin instead of the original rolled pin. I leave the u joint assembly on the pto shaft all the time. Much easier.
