I have a TYM 40 tractor that overheats easily when using a 5’ brush hog. Water pump belts are tight and radiator is clear and clean. Is this common?

I don't know Tym tractors. I do know many (most?) tractors have a screen in front of the radiator. Remove it and clean it, then use a hose or air to blow debris from the radiator from back to front. Replace the screen. Now check for a sticking thermostat. If it sticks shut the tractor will overheat. If you remove it you can check its operation in a pan of water on the stove.

I would say "no", that is not common.

I tried to look up your model tractor on TractorData.com, and it's not listed as a TYM model?

I can run a 6' brush hog all day in summer (90+ degrees) without overheating. Of course, I am stopping whenever needed (determined by looking at the temp gauge) and blowing the chaff out of my coolers and radiator. That is one of those "must do" tasks.

When you say, "radiator is clear and clean", are you sure? You could have chaff embedded inside the radiator cores, blocking the air flow through the radiator.

Also, how old is your tractor, and have you looked inside the top of the upper tank to see if you can see any deposits (calcium, etc) clogging up the inside of the core tubes? The fan spins when the engine is running? Is your fan shroud broken or gone?

Check the coolant level in the radiator. My 43 hp John Deere 4120 was running a little hot on a 5 ft medium duty Bush hog. It was about 1/2 gallon low on coolant. It turned out have a small leak from a sealant joint behind the timing cover.

Rather than pay the dealer est $ 6000 to install a gasket (est 22 hrs labor and $ 200 in parts, a big job that involves removing the front drive assembly and the oil pan), I poured in a $ 12 bottle of K-seal and topped off the coolant level. That fixed it up good as new. Over 50 hours since the repair, of mostly bush-hogging, and it hasn’t leaked a drop of coolant or got close to the hot line.

I do not know the hood configuration of your tractor but when I had heat issues with my Mahindra tractor I took the two side engine panels off and it ran much cooler.

Is the radiator clear because it's all water and not 50/50 with antifreeze?

I did the same on my RK24, worked fine after.

Closest thing I could find is a T400? Is this just a typo?

If so it's a Kubota engine.

Previous advice is good. Air filters and coolant need regular maintenance/monitoring. Grease and oil can contribute a bit to keeping heat down, too.

I don’t know where you are located but,
Down here in Dixie, the heat index’s are unbearable.
Small tractor mowing is gonna get hot around this part of the country.
