Skip this paragraph if you don't want the back story...
I had recently won an auction for a 4 in 1 combo bucket that is rather vintage (melroe/bobcat brand with the internal/covered hoses reading '95). I knew it would need the cylinders either rebuilt or replaced along with all the hoses. I considered going the rebuilt/rechrome way, but the cost likely would have been more than a pair of brand new cylinders. I found that a Bailey/chief brand cylinder listed the bottom cross tube at 3" which is what i needed. Most manufacturers spec a 3.25" cross tube, so I was willing the pay the additional cost to not have to do any modifications. I even called them to verify... well after ordering from a distributor, when received they were actually 3-1/8, and later learned that the company had changed them and not updated their website, supplies, or even then own support staff!
Ok. would you modify the 3.125" cylinder base cross tube to be narrower, or the 3.0x" mounts on the bucket to be wider? I do not have a mill, but have most other tools, including larger stationary belt sander with ceramic belts, 7" hand grinder, smaller grinders, a needle belt sander, and yes I have large hand files, but would rather not use them for time and sanity reasons. I can say that there should be virtually no rotational movement between the cylinder and the bucket as it is the base. Also if I end up modifying the cylinder base cross tube, I assume it would be best to extend the cylinder so that the piston/seals are far away from where any heat might be generated?
