Corn Head Grease

A tube of grease is 14 oz. and is approximately 2" diameter and 9" tall.
My chain box needs 1 quart of 90 wt oil but it leaks out so I'm switching to cornhead grease.
How many tubes of grease do I need to buy.
The parts counter girl said 4 but my math says 2.

Question: how many tubes of grease equal the same volume as a quart of oil?

The 14 oz is weight of grease in that tube - not the volume.

Using the formula - V= pie ( 3.14 ) x r squared ( 1 ) x L (9 )
V= 3.14 x 1 x 9
V = 28.26 cu. in. in a standard tube of grease

A quart is a bit over 57 cubic inches.

Two tubes of grease would be enough.

I thought so, but verification from a second source is nice. The counter girl also had problems finding me in their computer system. I've been in their books since 1988.

No. The cost of parts tear down and rebuild is expensive and time consuming. I have 2 brush hogs and round baler all running for head grease because of seals that failed but are good shape otherwise. 4 gearboxes total.

But it's a one and done fix.

I guess I don't like putting a band-aid on something. If someone comes along and runs the brush hog and doesn't know it now takes corn head grease...well now you have an entire gear box to fix instead of a seal.

But I guess if your the only person that runs it and you will be the only person in the future to run it...I guess it will work.

Just a thought. The volume of bigtillers chain case is one quart. Two tubes of corn head grease is so very close to that exact amount. I'll just bet bigtiller is going to have a whiz of a time trying to get two tubes all packed into that chain case. Oil will flow everywhere - thick grease - not so much.

I don't really know the properties of corn head grease- other than it's consistency. Would something like a 00 grease be acceptable?

It's sold at TSC or RK as cotton picker and spindle grease, or portable grease. It pours like honey.

The implement in question is a RTR 1558" tiller. IIRC the chain cover is about 8x16x2". Putting a third tube of grease in it probably wouldn't be a bad idea.
