Yeah, I know what it is, I just don’t think of it being used as part of a trailer hitch system.
You wouldn't want to scratch the paint! 🙄

Presumably if just changing the rear end ratio increases the tow rating, then the rest of the system (ie, braking) was already considered sufficient for the new tow rating.

Part of what goes into a manufacturer's statement of tow rating is the vehicle's ability to accelerate - both for safety when merging in to traffic, and to hold a reasonable speed on a grade (going uphill at a constant rate is accelerating). Obviously, the ability to stop also figures into this, but they do also factor in trailer brakes.

SAE J2807 (wikipedia link) provides an industry standard testing method; I can't find a free copy to read, but this motortrend article talks more about it; apparently it goes so far as to specify limits the effects on the tow vehicle's steering by the towed load - and yes, trailer brakes are assumed, though presumably the spec itself will state what the trailer braking requirements are (the wiki page mentions braking from 20mph

So little content about hauling things wrong, so much content about people wanting to make the planet unlivable for humans as quickly as possible.

I think you're missing what's really happening here. The only miter saw this guy owns large enough to cut 4x4's can't go past a 45 degree miter cut, and he really needed closer to 60 degrees. So, he found an economical way to get that done.
