Extra step - knee helper

I have one replacement knee that is going on 8 years old and the other one is in need of replacing. The method I have adopted for steps is to use the bad knee to hold myself, bend the good knee up or down a step then bring the bad knee up or down and repeat keeping the bad knee straight most of the time. It is a slow and at times awkward way getting up or down steps. But it is easier on a bad knee.

The 18” drop from the step was what was aggravating my bad knee. Now that I cut that down to a standard 9”, no trouble at all. It don’t matter what leg I start or finish with since I did that, but I was trying to make sure that last step down was with my good side, prior to adding that step.

The Hurlimann 435 is not a tall machine. They are popular orchard tractors in some circles.
The step up to the operator's station is not excessive by any stretch.

BUT.....

The Allied 195 loader frame that is fitted has a VERY STURDY horizontal plate about 6 or 7 inches below the platform.

I surprise myself how often I use that structure for a step when mounting the open station. The same detail is of no use at all when dismounting. Tucked under just that much.

What is wrong with the 8N? Gas and spark are about that can go wrong, other than the hydraulics.

I’ve been having some knee issues since my 1951 Ford 8n broke down in mid-May. My only other 3-point hitch tractor (John Deere 4120) has a much higher operators platform. I always did most of the smaller jobs, that required lots of getting on and off, with that old Ford. I am not going to have time to get that old Ford fixed until winter.

To save my knee, I made up a 9” step extension for the John Deere. After a couple days of usage, my knee is already feeling much better.

I was a little worried about loss of ground clearance but no trouble there so far. A neighbor kid got his ATV stuck in a deep ditch behind his house last night and I had to drive thru some deep mud to get to it. No issues going thru that mud or ditches with the new step.

The step extension took me about an hour to make, from steel that I found on my scrap pile, and about (5) 1/8” 6011 welding rods.

Combines have the bottom step hung from heavy cable. Gives you a lower step without the worry of catching the ground.

For those looking for a step, this isn't inexpensive but it does reduce the likely hood of damaging things when it gets in mud or snow.

Weak and intermittent spark. I’m thinking it might be in the wiring harness or coil. I’ll buy a NAPA coil, to replace the cheap aftermarket one on it now, and if that don’t work, I’ll swap out the harness. No time for that until winter though.

Have you replaced the distributor cap? If it spits and pops any the cap is probably it.
