Uh oh. This has got to be a first where a vehicle burst into flames from a wreck and shutdown a highway.

Interstate 80 (I-80) is a major transportation artery over the Sierra mountains nearby. A 2 hour shutdown is considered a major event. In this case the freeway was shut down for 16 hours. Not a small deal.

The report I read said people were kept 1/2 mile away due to toxic fumes, and that Tesla has dispatched a hazmat team to deal with the aftermath.

Not knocking an EV, but certainly a very different deal from a typical vehicle or truck fire.

Side note: I know this exact location (Laing rd offramp.) Was towing a travel trailer and blew a tire there once. 😩

Probably the first time the vehicle burned for 16 hours and firefighters said they were just going to let it burn out and not attempt to extinguish. Seems as though the HAZMAT response is much more robust too.

That is a thing with EV fires. The batteries are sealed and armored enough that getting water on them is problematic.

Car fires are common and EVs are harder to put out. It will likely change as procedures evolve but right now 'let it burn' is a valid response.

It's not about getting water on the batteries. Fire dept dropped red retardant around the rig to keep the fire from spreading to the woodland. Anybody know what the carbon footprint of a 16 hr burning lithium battery and truck is :rolleyes::unsure: how's that add up in the zero emission report.

Tesla burns under water.

Needs more water to put out the fire!

A lot of cynicism in this post. Aren’t you guys all buying into the pixie dust Tesla’s put out when they catch fire?

So I’m not sure I understand, the truck wrecked and caught fire or it caught fire and then wrecked.

Last week, a Tesla burst in flames during charging in a parking spot near the Lisbon airport. Over 200 vehicles completely destroyed.

If you know Portuguese, here the news article: Mais de 200 carros destruídos em incêndio num armazém de aluguer de viaturas perto do aeroporto de Lisboa

A fire broke out in a car rental warehouse in Prior Velho, in the municipality of Loures, near Lisbon airport, on Friday afternoon. The alert was given at around 6:00 pm.

According to CM , the fire started in a Tesla and eventually spread to other cars. The lower floor of the park has already been engulfed in flames. More than 200 cars were destroyed, according to Civil Protection.

No details yet of how the Tesla burst in flames. Wouldn't surprise me if it was arson.

But any car that goes up in flames in a warehouse full of other cars would most likely have the same affect.

"The big rig went off eastbound I-80 near the offramp for Laing Road and crashed into trees, CHP logs show."

"CHP said they are investigating if the driver fell asleep."

Yes ICE cars catch fire. Those fires are categorically not the same as an EV fire. How hot does lithium burn? How long? How easy is it to extinguish? Not the same.

No point in arguing, the dude is off his rocker. The rest of us with functioning brains know the difference with EV fires and how serious they are.

I tell my kids There are big problems, and then there are little problems:

Another Tesla story, same day. While that truck burned between Sacramento and Reno, this Tesla went into Folsom Lake 50 mile west of there.

(he backed in and it floated to where we see it.)

Oops.

Much of the public concern is focused on the Chinese-made batteries that many auto manufacturers now use in their vehicles.

WTF, those big rigs aren,t self driving ??????

Maybe the self-driving feature is what put it into the trees
