Installing a 12” strike plate for security

I prefer #4 buck, in my 2 3/4 12 gauge that get's 27 .22 balls going down range with each round.
I switched to that decades ago after having coyotes run through 00 buck with just a yelp and limp at times, after the switch none ran away.
Yes. #4 is my choice for 'yotes. That would also work well for a home defense load.

I keep seeing shotgun shotgun shotgun. I would say that may be a good answer for some, but for many women not so good.

You might have 4 -5 rounds and significant recoil. before reloading.

Get Americas Rifle, an AR15 in 5.56 or .223. A proven stopper since 1966. The collapsible stock can be kept short for maneuverability. 30 rounds in the mag. Double tap each perp.

With completely through the house and over to the neighbors. A rifle is for follow ups and longer ranges which aren't going to happen in a house.

Keep the door how it is so you keep your R value and install the below with a 2x4 or 6. Put two wood screws or handles on the inside of the board so they are inside the span of the brackets so the board cannot be slid sideways also this makes it easy to remove from the inside. Position the hing side bracket slightly higher then the knob side bracket.

On the main entrance put in a security door. With a cheap handle (so it breaks if they try to snatch on it) and a nice two sided keyed dead bolt. They make them where you can swap out the glass for screens as the seasons change. So it doubles as a screen door. And long heck head screws make sure you drill the screws so not to split the boards.

Lastly reinforce your hinges and bolt plates with long screws.

Now granted this will not stop a sawzall with a demo blade so secure your tools as well!

Put this one on the door knob side.

I came out of the woods one day last winter and the GSD across the road went on full alert, standing 1/2 way between the road and the house, keeping an eye on me while barking. The other 2 dogs there joined in... standing on the lawn looking up the road as they had no clue what they were barking at.
Eventually the lab saw me and ran out into the road to say hi. At that point I crossed the road onto the lawn. I'd rather take a chance on getting bit than see a good dog get run over.

I’m tired of all this talk of shooting people. Try an alternative. We simply connect all exterior metal to a heavy duty fence charger. Solar, on a photocell, and controlled by one insde switch.
Everyone in the mountains has to hot wire to keep the bears out of the house anyway.

whats going to stop them from going to another door instead? or going in a window which is much easier to break into?

You might add a Panic switch that your wife could use with a remote. Have it turn on several bright outside lights mounted way out of reach and a few very loud sirens and alarms. Let the whole world know that she is ready.

This could easily be setup for when the house isn't occupied as well.

Do it the smart way. Hot wire all reachable doors and windows. It only takes once to teach a bear, and people are supposed to be even smarter than bears.

This isn’t speculation, it’s simply part of living remotely. I only mention it because it may be knowledge lost or not known to newcomers to country living.

And because it is kinder. gentler, and more effective to teach rather than destroy.

Forget the gun advice. Sounds good but look what happens when the cops do their job with a gun. They are indited. Besides, what would you do with the body? A big dog that barks is safer and better than a manslaughter charge. A neighbor has a picture by his door that says " Property protected by guard dog" and a recording that sounds like a dog barking that turns on automatically like a light sensor. Avoid the lawsuit.

Sorry to hear you live in a Socialist state. If someone breaks my door down to get at me, they have a choice in whether they live to see the police or not.

Whether they die to my gun or my dog or live to see another sunrise is for them to decide if they present a lethal threat to my survival or that of those I care for.

You can be sued civilly for any reason someone wants but, a criminal conviction takes a good prosecutor to start and a jury of peers to agree with them. I prefer to live to face a jury if push comes to shove. If you will leave me alone, I will do the same. I am not going to live in fear of a possible prosecutor needing to grab headlines during a re-election campaign and let me die due to violent crime from a repeat offender for fear of possible litigation in the future.

If you want to surrender to crime, that's your choice.

Belgian Malinois are awesome dogs if you have the energy level to take care of one. These dogs are way too active to be happy and a good fit for an owner who isn't very active with them.

Even a German Shepherd from good bloodlines (not a backyard breeder), needs a lot of daily exercise to be happy and content.

For anyone looking for a dog for personal protection, or one in general, please use the "Breed Selector" formerly on Purina's website and now on Animal Planet before you buy a dog that won't work for your family.

Hornady "Dead Coyote" for me. Hard shot and plenty of power to get the job done.

Women are fully capable of running a 1911 or pump shotgun IF THEY WANT TOO!

Regarding rifles, over-penetration is a real concern in urban areas. If you live on ~40-acres out in the country, a good semi-auto rifle is worth its weight in GOLD IMHO!

In my case, the AR-15 is for dogs killing livestock. My beside has a 12-Gauge and an AR-10.

And, it is hard to argue self-defense at ~200 yards or more!

Push comes to shove if it's necessary to reach out and say hello, the situation has gone to he!! and self defense will be a mote point.

To set this issue straight. The issue was a shop being broken into not a residence. In a residence, in my state you have the right to protect yourself or family by whatever means you deem necessary. Dead men don't testify. Shoot somebody breaking into a shop or garage, the dead guy better have a gun with his fingerprints on it or the shooter is in some deep s--t. Has happened here and probably in Texas and Oklahoma as well.

Commercial properties are a totally different situation from being a homeowner who has their door kicked in by some deranged person.

In terms of lethal force, Texas Concealed Carry passage was fueled by several incidents. One being a pickup driven into a Luby's Cafeteria where the driver jumped out and started shooting women including I believe his Ex. Details are a bit fuzzy as that was a very long time ago.

Several patrons that lost family members during their lunch commented that they had to leave their firearms in the car in the parking lot and were at the mercy of this deranged man.

I sincerely hope that if I am shopping or eating at a restaurant and some nut job starts killing people, a half dozen or so Grandmas and Grandpas pull pistols and return fire. I further hope some honorably discharged veterans are also armed and able to defend everyone else from a nut job as well. In terms of myself, I don't want to have to sit idly by while some nut job executes people even if it is in a space that is other than my own home, if I am armed, I HAVE A CHOICE.

Obviously, in public I would hope law enforcement would respond and come to everyone's rescue but that is problematic today for a number of unrelated or loosely related reasons. At my rural homestead, I am on my own effectively since law enforcement is so far away and is stretched so thin.

Interesting that the OP of this thread was 'last seen' on the forum on the day he posted it. Hope the situation didn't go pear shaped.
