Cordless angle grinder could have cut the lock on the cargo trailer without damaging the trailer, but it looks like those thieves used something like a crowbar. Their aim wasn't too good, either, because they punctured the trailer sidewall besides the entry door.
Cordless angle grinders also make excellent man doors in shipping containers and metal sheds.

It’s only getting worse… many believe avoiding urban areas is the solution but my rural friends are having just as much if not more…

In the city with good neighbors much is stopped but rural often no one around to make the call or turn on the lights, etc.

More are using trackers for equipment to aid in recovery and others, especially construction sites have to have someone around and a good dog is a plus.

If you are in California law enforcement here doesn’t come out for property crime and even if caught damage under $950 gets a pass…

I feel your pain, same thing happened to me when we bought our property 5 years ago. Without going into to much detail, the scum bag was caught and spent time in prison. I have a 1000 ft -plus long drive way and people know not to drive down it unless invited. If they make it past my two dogs, they got me and my little friend to deal with. It too bad that this is where we are at in this day and age.
In talking with the sherif, biggest deterrent is bright lights and cameras mounted high.
I installed 4, dusk to dawn floods on each side of each corner of the pole barn, motion sensor lights on each side. Cameras all around including a few dummies. People complain that the area is lit up like an airport. Tough ****. No one has bothered me since.
I also have a 4’ x 4’ sign that is placed over the man door, which very clearly states,
“ Smile fucker”. Sherif got a big kick out of that!

I live on my property. No damn security cameras. "Guests" that I do not instantly recognize are met by me and my 12 gauge.

It did not take long, at all, for word to spread - this is how the "old fart" will be handling uninvited guests.

You come to do me harm - better bring your own grave stone.

It was only the very first year that we had any "bad folks" come to visit.

Forty two years and not a single problem.
I had just moved to my current abode about 18 years ago. Watching some late night TV I got up to get something and saw movement by the barn and footsteps in the light snow.
Grabbed my Remington 870 loaded with double aught buckshot and went out.
Fired one in the air. Two kids hit the snow yelling not to be shot.
They made some excuse for being by the barn at 1 AM.
I let them go but warned them that I have a FEL for a reason.
The main culprit lives down the street and has been busted countless times for B&E and minor theft in the hood.
My place has never been touched.
When he sees me at the mailbox etc it's always, "hello sir, how are you sir".
He may not respect me but Remington? For sure!;)

IME, there seems to be a class of thieves that target new construction sites. In our case, it helped to have a locked gate at the entrance to eliminate easy drive-up access. The gate didn't turn the place into Fort Knox, but it seemed to be enough to send the crooks down the road.

I was originally questioning whether I wanted to live in the neighborhood, but the problem went away when we moved in.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear this. Get things locked down before the scumbags come back. Solar motion lights at the gate. GATE? Do you have a gate? Signage! Cameras help, but aren't always that clear and if you are new to town might not help you identify the perps.

I had to tone my "greetings" down a bit. The early years of our life in Alaska - trespass also assumed - "entry onto property with intent to do bodily harm". Homesteaders often shot trespassers. No questions asked - drop them right in your front yard. Let the wolves clean up the mess.

Best the State Troopers could do - try to save the body so the family had something to bury.

When you saw a - No Trespassing - sign, best you take note and modify your route.

Based upon the extensive damage to the trailer skin and door, it looks like whoever did this didn't give a rip either because they are drugged up and/or some kind of violent gang types.

Just showing a firearm here will get you a trip downtown unless you have a permit even in your front yard…
