I've been working in, around, and for European employers and customers for most of my career. I've watched them slowly but surely regulate themselves out of business, as their regulatory costs have just climbed way beyond what sales into Europe can ever support, at least for manufacturing and test equipment.
Deere is moving out to Mexico for the same reason. The USA has the very same problem. Although i admit that the bunch in Brussels is creating their own jobs by regulating stuff that doesnt need more regulation. E.g. a max Wattage for vacuum cleaners because they are concerned with energy consumption... so now, people run their vacuum cleaners longer to get the same work done... its BS.

Or like our new rural political party says: You cant act green, when you're in the red 🙃

That's a major problem with so many attempts to 'improve' things... They don't think through things well enough or else they just get so wrapped up in 'doing something' that the end result is just more difficult and costly but doesn't at all help get to the stated goal.

In the dummy category (towing below 3500kg or 7700 lbs) there is no confusion, its all ISO X-50 balls. Above that, its CDL territory anyways. There, its all DIN standards because the Germans are orderly people, their Deutsche Industrie Norm literally set the standard ahead of anyone else.
Yeah, I didn't mean that there's much confusion it the towing department, but in general.

As mentioned above, including by you, the powers don't always know what they're doing or legislating about. But it sounds good to non-thinking individuals.

That's a good example. It takes a certain amount of work (3600 Joules = Watt-hours) to get a job done, so if you halve the power (watts), you double the time. The only way to change that is to reduce the amount of work required, such as mandating less-plush carpet.

Same as efforts to improve engine efficiency in automobiles. You can nudge things a bit, but in the end, it takes a certain amount of energy to accelerate 5000 lb. of steel from 0 - 60 mph. The best way to make a huge improvement to around-town mileage is to make lighter vehicles, or accelerate less quickly.

I would say, the power to move things by medium flow (air, water, whatever medium) is mass x speed square. The lower power vacuum cleaner is probably required to run a lot longer to pick up the same trash from your carpet with less airspeed.

But hey, if it sounds smart and it means we have something to do, thats enough validation for a civil servants job, right ? 🤷‍♂️🙃

The only problem is that they are NOT civil servants anymore, they have come to believe that they are the rulers and we are the servants.

Yep, I think that's roughly correct, probably with some scaling constants to account for the medium and the carpet pile in which it's buried. But it honestly doesn't matter exactly how the work is defined. Whatever the number, we know it's a constant, hence my point about Watt-hours.

I guess when the same people are casting the deciding votes on everything from household appliance energy consumption to wildlife control measures, all under the influence of various financial supporters, it's going to be hard to find true experts who can make informed and independent decisions.

They had to something to top inventing the ventless fuel can. I mean, that was a tough act to follow! o_O

Yeah, meanwhile in Europe the "wolf experts" from NGOs tell us theres nothing to worry about, while two small dogs are grabbed from their owners leash and a child has been bitten. Our country doesnt have nature, merely some parks. Yet the "experts" tell us the wolf belongs among us and farmers can just put up better fences...

Some of our Western states, while having impressive amounts of open space and wilderness (eg. Wyoming), are putting in an express lane to that problem, by having imported non-native species of wolves. :D

They travel as well, we had 105 pound coyote (per conservation) shot near here. Later DNA test confirmed mostly Gray Wolf.

Gray wolves ranged more than 90% of the US area before being wiped out down here. They may be getting populated from elsewhere but pretty much all of us except people in coastal California are right where they naturally ranged.

We also did not have black bears 15 years ago (or mountain lions) now we get be bear aware notes from conservation and have a bear season. The bears were here all along as DNA testing confirmed, distinct population in MO. Cougars are seen several times a year, game cams are games changer for them, more elusive than bobcats around here.

Bobcat(s?) here have gone from secretive, to approaching the deck while they can see us looking out the closed window. I'll try to find my photos of that.

Here he is on critter cam when we were away.

Studies show 87% of researchers' findings agree with the notions of the institutions that funded their research.

I've heard this before, but never seen a good source posted to prove its authenticity.

If true, I'd be willing to bet a large part of that is because said funding institutions are specifically seeking out and hiring researchers with a publishing history that already favors their goal, or at least doesn't contradict it. Put otherwise it's likely only a very small part of that 87% is actually changing their tune based on the source of the funding.

When the outcome is dubious... what will they choose to explain ? 🤷‍♂️

I mean, ive written building permit calculations, subsidy requests, warranty rejections, always with a scientifically supported conclusion for the outcome i could get away with.

Why would "scientists" be holier than me ?

In cases where their funding is tied to a given result, perhaps they are not! But if we're talking science, let's see some valid source material for that claim, before we dig into the "why" question.

I think another factor is that these days many, many people see themselves as 'activists' and that they are doing some great public service to sway the world to whatever they view as the 'greater good'. Based on the public interaction I've observed with people on one side of the political spectrum and (in far greater visibility) on social media observations: values, character and integrity has been superseded by activism. One can no longer make a reliable assumption that a "scientist" is objective nor follows scientific methods rigorously.

The scientific method is to have the source data peer reviewed, i know. But when selecting which data to use, some data is more convenient than other... The more abstract and complex a matter gets, the easier it is to steer the outcome.
