I bought a 1990 Ford New Holland 27 HP tractor/mower model CM274 4 WD , it has 476 +/- hours. It sat for a long time before the guy i bought it from bought it then sold it to me. It has a 3 cylinder Shibaro (?) diesel engine. It starts fine, runs fine, but it is blowing out about 1 quart of oil out the breather every 1.5-2.0 hours, it smokes more out of the breather than it does out of the exhaust. I tried soaking the pistons in ATF and penetrating oil all last winter, ocassionally rocking the crank every time i walked by it hoping to free up the rings if they were stuck or full of rust, but no improvement. Any ideas other than pulling the pistons and changing the rings?

Most likely has fine rust pitting on the inside cylinder walls from sitting. It may eventually "polish" itself clean and stop smoking so much. Either pull head and inspect, or just keep putting oil in it and it may clean itself up.

Any idea how many hours it might take to clear up, it looks like a mosquito fogger

Just keep adding oil. It depends on how possibly rusty the inner cylinder walls are. The will either polish out or continue to wear down the piston rings and continue to burn oil.

Those issues also make me wonder how hard the PO worked that tractor. Just ginning around or let set idling for long periods of time could cause the cylinders to glaze.

Could be leaking intake valve seals.
