My mower is down this week, possible blown head gasket, and I'm struggling to find time to work on it. My wife is egging me on to just buy a new one.

Hmm...

Well, my last two mowers both were losing there engines when they were retired.

We'll see what I find when I dig into this. The truth is, re-powering my machine with a new motor is still probably much cheaper than a new battery mower of similar capacity, and I doubt my present issues are even that bad.

I said this many pages back. 2 mowers back was Honda powered and blew a jug gasket. Had the dealer put new ones in for 800 and it never was right after that. The $$$ spent was a waste.

Yeah, I can believe it. But I usually do all of my own engine work.

If the problem is bigger than my time or patience will allow, I can drop a new crate motor on the thing for $2300 OEM or under $2k aftermarket. I'd hate to put that kind of money into a 18 year old machine, but the reality is that everything on it is in really good shape.

What's the going rate on a 60" commercial mower at 25 hp these days? I'm guessing $12k+, based on 2007 pricing + inflation?

What's the pricing on a BEV mower rated above 6 acres per hour and with a commercial-duty deck and drives?

That's true. Fixing < replacing

A Hustler X One is about 12-15k depending on deck and motor choice.

BEV? $25K plus in that category

Wow. I'm not one of those guys who needs bragging rights on the best mower, it's just a stupid machine that cuts my lawn. :D That said, I hate the thing a little more each time a repair interrupts my use of it. It'll be interesting to see how the commercial BEV units hold up in the hands of homeowners who just have a little more than the average lawn, and might have traditionally bought a commercial-duty gasser.

In hindsight my XOne was overkill. On the plus side it was $9k new 6 years ago and with what I do with it, will last 20 years plus. I fear what I'll pay for the next one.
