As long as they don’t put their snout in there i am fine with the outcome, if they get hit they learn to keep their distance … Hopefully they see it flying by a few time to give them a chance to get the message but the way I see it what dosent kill them makes them stronger… I see my dogs so little I want them to be free when I am around... but obviously I choose my battle.

Auger scares me the most, because of PTO shaft entanglement and auger bit entanglement possibilities. I realize there are other hazards on an auger, but these are the hazards that actually strike fear in me.

BTW, the car differential mowing machine is an amusing notion, but how fast does the blade go? At tractor speeds, I'm imagining it doesn't go much faster than I could turn a crank by hand. Does it actually cut grass?

Depends on the gear ratio and tire size.

With tall tires and gearing in the mid 2s it wouldn't turn particularly fast, but with short tires and something like 4.88s it would.

It's a rather large spiral auger - driven off the PTO. Used to split firewood. I try not to envision clothing getting caught in this auger and what could happen.

Close calls almost taking an eye out in the woods with multiple branches. If I break an implement I will fix it. Fixing the operators head is more painful and expensive.

2nd, a post hole digger getting out of whack learn to dance pretty quick. Lifting and carrying heavy objects on rough ground anytime a rear tire gets light is bad news So plenty of 3 point weight and wheel weights and /or fluid is a Great Help there.

I love and respect my post hole auger. It drills holes really fast. It scares me. So I shut off the tractor when installing the thing. I also am scared of other people getting stuck in the auger so instead of using a long bar that someone holds to steady the auger so that it starts straight I use a counterweight that hangs off of a bar and it counterbalances the auger so that it hangs vertical. When people get too close to the auger I castigate them. I know it's severe but the damn thing scares me and I don't want anyone to get hurt. It doesn't look as dangerous as it is.

That spiral splitter terrifies me just thinking about it.
And the PTO powered Post Hole Drill is a close second.

However , for fatalities, the 3pt mounted back hoe led the list of farm accidents for so many years that tractor dealers used to have signs on the wall warning about them.

Regardless of the danger, our family had one and used that 3pt PTO-driven BH for years without incident...and then one day it almost got me. Missed by an inch... I had done the classic mistake which was forgetting to disengage the tractor draft control. Climbed aboard, started the hoe, which then promptly tried to fold the operating levers back into the seat.... trapping the operator. Yes, the forgetful person was myself. It only pinned the tail of my shirt as I bailed off sideways. Too many were less lucky..

But I can learn, and what I learned was to sell that BH for scrap that very day.

We used one of these when I was a kid
