I don't understand why anyone would stand in the way of helping, either.

Not sure that rebuilding higher would help anything because the nearby streams eroded the road beds from underneath. And to what flood elevation would you rebuild when this was such a rare event?

Looking at the drone footage of the section of I40 washed away by the river near the TN/NC tunnels in the mountains, I don't see many options for relocating the interstate. There's the river. There's the mountain. Seems like that area has always been problematic for rock slides, too, as was mentioned earlier in this thread.

Here is the record time rebuild that happened in my city that I found exemplifies what can happen…

For anyone interested Ive posted the link below and seeing it happen in a city where it can take months to go though the bureaucracy to remove a single backyard tree it shows what can happen and how it happened.

Haydude, unfortunately, we are living a cover your butt society, not one that has common sense. Kinda sad.

Probably not relocating, but certainly building a more robust engineering design.

The State of Tennessee replaced a steel girder bridge built in the early 1900s with a modern concrete bridge nearby within the last ten years. It was a planned project. The Tennessee highway patrol came out and blocked all access to the new bridge after it had been open only a short while after unusual cracking was noticed in the concrete apron. Turned out that the engineers had undersized the hammerhead on the support piers. The state spent more money building concrete supports under the hammerheads that just about doubled the original construction budget. We had to drive quite a bit further while the new bridge was being fixed. Unlike the old bridge, they also placed a support pier in the middle of the river, but those engineers assured me that it was done right. Since I drive over it a lot, I hope it was done right.

This is the hollar to our farm. hillside on left, road, creek, hillside on right. If it washes out, it's usually due to culverts getting plugged. right around this bend creek switches to left side, as the road the climbs up out of the hollar.

Bet a clog there makes a mess. I've got my share of trouble spots.
