7/8" is 22.225mm... i think i have 21 and 16mm spark plug sockets. Yup, looked it up, 16 and 21mm is all we have here.
The 7/8 inch is the thread size. Seems like they were a 7/8-18 thread if I remember correctly. We have 10-12-14 mm thread spark plugs with the 14 mm being the most common thread size and 5/8 3/4 18mm and 13/16 spark plug sockets. Don't remember the wrench size for the 7/8 inch or 18 mm thread plugs Haven't seen a 7/8 or 18 mm in years..

I think manufacturers have reserved that size for aviation applications, for whatever reason. Ever since car plugs went to 100k mile intervals, and me never keeping a car long enough to hit 100k anymore, most of the plugs I encounter are on OPE and run 13/16" or 3/4".

The last 18 mm thread plug I dealt with was in a 7 hp wisconsin engine.

Yes, i mistyped on the calculator.

But you guys have the problem of requiring two sets of sockets and wrenches, because everything thats built in the US for the world markets is metric, while local manufacturers and hardware stores keep selling imperial fasteners, and machines assembled with them. (Or at least, when i was in Canada in 2005 we still put half inch bolts in grain vac piping in a Great Lakes port, instead of M12 even though gas was already sold per liter)

Here, the only guys that have imperial sockets and wrenches are those restoring classic UK cars from the 60s.
Ah, but your ratchets are still 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" drive

I was going to ask if anybody knew of towing wrong because of metric threads.
Well there was that airliner that came down on an abandoned airfield after liter/gallon/pounds/kilos conversions were calculated wrong and it ran out of fuel mid flight.

Well that's in the general field of Transportation. Close enough to Towing Wrong? No? :)
