I saw this on FB and thought it was kind of interesting. When you need a bridge, you build a bridge with what you have, as quickly as you can!!!

That is the way many bridges were built in rural Tennessee across creeks. Sawmill lumber is still used for the deck on many even if they have steel beams.

I wouldn’t think the local fire chief has any authority over flight operations.
Incident command is often with the chief...

I've seen the fire chief over rule Police and Sheriff and the building and planning department.

I'm guess the county director of public health can override fire which is public safety here...

I've had three different agencies give entirely different directives at the hospital and all I could say is you guys work it out and let me know... and eventually they did.

Can a local fire department chief make decisions for a federal agency, such as setting up a no flight zone?

Lake lure has a population of 1,500 people. They show to have 2 full time fire fighters with 23 part time firefighters. I don't know the process, but I'd be scratching my head if every local fire department could set up a no fly zone and exactly how that is communicated with the FAA.

What I do know in the civilian world is give a guy a "badge" with power and be careful. Know nothing about flight regulations, but I do get asked about local codes pertaining to my industry. I always start off by telling someone that I can tell them what the code is, BUT... even if you're right and the county inspector is wrong, it will get you no where but to put a target on your back if you prove the inspector wrong because he can make your life miserable down the road. Better or worse, the way a lot of people are wired.

How is it interference when a helo pilot picks up someone in response to their distress signal and then takes them to the fire chief for aid? An older, dehydrated person could have fallen and broken a hip trying to be rescued on foot in that washed away terrain.

Probably knows the area better than some clown from north of Richmond

End of day, safety is paramount, I get that.

However, my understanding was this pilot was there literally a day after the SHTF and he was one of the first pilots on the scene.

As quick as the fire chief set up a no fly zone, I have little doubt that he could have authorized this ONE pilot to try and help the people he could since he was already on the scene and apparently was the only helicopter pilot there.

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse with this, only point out that we can bash bigger organizations such as FEMA on what they do and some of the decisions they make, but the reality is even the "local one man show" who should have more common sense than a large organization (particularly federal) and can make the exact same mistakes, or even worse.

No doubt. Pretty certain you could say that about any local.

The bigger issue IMO is this local "leader" felt threatened because help was there and he didn't ask for it, and he exerted his power in a negative way to show people who is the boss.

I don’t know the answer… only that I was surprised at how much power out city Fire Chief has in a very broad way…

Last week the Fire Chief called in air support for a 5 acre hillside Fire 100% inside urban city limits… C130 tanker and helicopters with water.

He ordered the air space closed to aviation except for air support for the 5 alarm wild-land interface zone.

33 years ago to the day 3000 homes in city limits lost in a similar situation
